The word “mascara” means makeup that is used to darken and thicken the eye lashes. Mascara barb has dark markings around its eyes hence it got the name “mascara barb.” The amount of darkness around the eyes varies in different mascara barbs. Mascara barb is also called red necklace barb because they have a curved line of red dots on their body which has the shape of a necklace.
Mascara barb has dark markings around its eyes extending towards the gill plate. It also has dark markings on the base of the dorsal fin as well as the base of its tail.
Distribution: Endemic to the Southwest Indian states of Karnataka and Kerala (Western Ghats) where it has been collected from the Netravati, Chalakudy, and Kallada river basins in recent years, though the precise extent of its distribution remains unclear.
