As a former MLB & NFL mascot ... I was shocked about the level of research and footage that went into this piece. I concur that pretty much everything described from the 1970's up was info that I was aware of (I'm even pictured in it a couple of times) - But I had NO idea about that info regarding the turn of the 20th century stuff. That's pretty disturbing.

The Randall Simon incident actually led to the creation of the Mascot Hall of Fame, believe it or not. Dave Raymond, the original Phanatic, and a lot of Philadelphia mascots in the city drafted a 'mascot bill of rights' at the state capitol. The following year, the Mascot Hall was created online and inducted its first members. It was online only until 2014, when Raymond signed an agreement with the city of Whiting, Indiana [which is 2 and a half hours from me], to build a permanent Hall and museum. It opened in 2018 and, as of this year, is now up to 30 inductees.

Ever notice at Dodger Stadium the mascots tended to stay away from the front of the Dodger dugout? Tommy would have a conniption and order them ejected when he could. He had an interview with KTLA tv that carried a few of their games up until 2020 at least. Back in the day before cable took it over KTLA was the Dodger station with Vin Scully. He said the mascots were for the kids and not mockery and they are not out there to aggravate players.

My grandfather was an LSU student in the late 50’s-early 60s. With the help of a little bit of Jack, he once got so pissed at the Ole Miss mascot, that he ran onto the field, tackled the mascot, and stole his Ole Miss flag. He ran into the stands, asked some girl to hide it in her jacket, and they met up later so he could get the flag from her.

I remember the Pirate Parrot episode of Real Sports and it is fascinating. I personally love the Philly Fanatic because lets be honest if you have a lousy baseball club at least you want to be entertained even though your team is 20 games out of 1st place and not a lot to play for. Compared to Ball Hawks the mascots are a fun part of the game. I also get the fake Mascot outside hustling for money like a Las Vegas street performer. I am sure all the clubs have lawyers ready to sue anyone trying to scam the public. The San Diego Chicken looks hilarious I never knew he was so well known.

My buddy was part of the spirit squad at UCLA when I was in college and they all rotate who plays Joe and Josie Bruin. They would switch who it was at halftime, so Joe Bruin was sometimes a foot taller in the second half than the first half. After a while they told my friend he couldn't play Joe Bruin anymore because he was too short and it was causing issues. He didn't complain because he said it was too hot anyway. He did have some great stories of kids saying stupid things to him and opposing fans heckling him, but nothing too bad. My favorite part was when he had to go to an event the next day and I visited his apartment and asked him what the big bag in his bedroom was. Then he opened it up and it was just Joe Bruin's head in it. That was kinda sad and a little creepy.

While showing things that went wrong during stunts I'm a bit disappointed that SJ Sharkie getting stuck hanging over the San Jose Sharks' arena wasn't mentioned. No injuries, just around 20 minutes of hanging about 50 feet above the ice (and of course a delay to the start of the game) before things finally got sorted out. While they were trying to sort things out they put little gym mats that couldn't be more than a few inches thick under where he was hanging as if they would've done anything. They eventually lowered an extra rope to him and he tied it around himself and several people worked together to pull him up. When they got him nearly all the way up he got caught on something so 1 woman climbed out without a harness or anything to swing him around the thing he was caught on. The Sharks beat the defending champion Red Wings 2-0 that night.

I've never heard of similar stats about the heat for the people who play the mascot-like characters at Disneyland, and I watch a lot of videos about the Disney Parks (also fursuits. I know they have to be aware of the possibility of heat stroke and often wear ice vests, but I don't think there's any hobby a bunch of people could love so much that they'd endure the extent of what you described without being paid). I feel like either Disney has kept it impossibly under wraps, or the tribulations of sports mascots aren't inevitable. The teams just need better material science and higher quality costumes. For the major leagues and equivalents, not doing so is unacceptable. I'm sure they could come to some kind of agreement with Disney to commission costumes from them.

In the 2000s I worked with characters like this at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, and they could only be out performing in 30 minute intervals per their union contract, and had to have a break of at least 30 minutes after each outing. Some of the costumes had a little fan inside if possible, but most didn't. These were top quality costumes, but they definitely got super hot and safety was always a concern.
