Mick, your black spot issue could be from either too much humidity or water staying on the leaf to long. What happens is the water finds the slightest imperfection or injury on a leaf and either a bacteria or a fungus settles into the leaf and it becomes infected. Problem is that it's hard to tell whether its bacterial or fungus. Good news is that it usually only affects that particular leaf and not the whole plant as you are seeing with the new growth coming in strong and clean. Hope this helps, when I was growing orchids simply cutting the humidity back a bit solved the problem. Probably easier than adding more fans to keep airflow up so water doesn't sit on leaves to long.

Much appreciated I was a little unsure of the black spots especially when it had created cell damage to the leaves, but I’d have to agree that water could of remained on the leaves after watering even with the fans working.

@@MicksMasdevalliaorchids I'm actually in love with it for its shiny leaves, so if the blooms are going to bother me too much I'll just cut them off. But I also have a Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis and I'm scarxcited for those flowers.

Hi Mick, good catch up video and good to see things are moving forward now. Still a bit slow down here but getting there. I have had the exact same problems as you that are ongoing. Always will be now we have the very high humidity this time of year even though the fan runs 24/7. My cool house goes down to 8C and has done for quite a few years, may even let it go lower this year we shall see. I have a sulphur burner and there is a major downside to it in that it covers leaves in the sulphur dust and that was a nightmare to keep under control. I used it in the warm house for the Phragmipedium but it was too time consuming to clear up. Same problems with bush snails and slugs and snails. What I have done, one of our members from Bournemouth bought a bag of Alpaca fur at the show in Malvern this year - it is just the bits that do not come off whole with the fleece. She was having issues and tried it then gave me what was left in the bag. I put a fair bit of it down by the door (there is no other way they can possibly get in here but through the openings the door leaves, I keep a draft excluder down (actually it is a piece of laminate flooring) and I then put a whole line either side of this and extended it over 6” either side of the door. Obviously you need to not break your neck and trip over the piece of wood every time you go in and out (that is tricky I can assure you) but it becomes second nature in the end so I leave it there all year round. I did the same in the warm house. I have just come in from my weekly check of my double pots, where it is usually guaranteed that I find slugs and snails) and there was nothing, what I did find bizarrely was a very small worm. The beauty of the fur is that when it gets dirty you just rinse it off and dry it then put it back, she has some more for me as well as she went to another country show and bought another bag. If you want I can send you some to try. It is certainly making a difference. I think I lost 5 draculas from that heat in the summer but they are happy again now, although whether they remain so with all this humidity is another story. Glad the vampira is growing on nicely. Take care.

Sorry Lynn YT only just pushed your comment over, anyway thanks for replying and yes it’s definitely been one of those years, I’ve spent the last few days trying to recover more space in the greenhouse by moving things around you’ll see on next video when I get time, I’m just checking everything for winter and adding a few more bits of bubble wrap. Thanks for the offer of the alpaca fur but now I’ve sealed around the floors it should be better. My Dracula’s are loving it at the moment I might let the temps drop a bit as well this winter but I always panic about frost and if we get snow as well it might be a problem for me, one thing I’m going to do is look for any online Black Friday deals and get a better heater my current one does it’s job but when the heater reaches it temperature it switches off but the fan keeps running which I think is an additional unnecessary cost especially now with these electricity prices, I want one which reaches temperature and switches off until temperatures drop again. Catch you later and happy growing.

Really enjoyed that Mick! I wish my greenhouse was as tidy as yours. I’m probably too busy doing fancy editing! 🤣 I’ve just had one Masdevallia come up with about 15 spikes but every single one is black at the tips, yet they continue to grow. I’m guessing they’ve all blasted. It’s never bloomed for me yet so I wondered if maybe it was a rare black budded specimen! 🤣

It may be worth a fortune Geoff lol, unfortunately this weather doesn’t help massies the slightest change and they blast. P.S I really don’t have time or skill to do editing.

To be fair Geoff I tend to leave them alone during autumn and winter with just a quick spray when I remember but during summer I give them a regular orchid feed and a weekly dip.

@@MicksMasdevalliaorchids Hmm - I think I'm probably just neglecting them a bit too much. I spray when I remember and that's about it. Once this one keels over I don't think I'll buy another. Yours are looking fab though. 😁

Does the gas exhaust from heater impact the plants. Seen this posted by other growers
@agpizz
@agpizz Жыл бұрын
Yes but sometimes its necessary! I have propane heater for emergency use only!!! The Burn off of propane gas will increase humidity and c02 which seems positive but there is also the potential of killing your plants! If the heater head of your propane burner isnt efficient in burning all the gas from your tank and you have minuet raw propane released in your greenhouse it will poison your plants!! I had it happen to my nepenthes greenhouse a year or two ago! and learned about it! and saved my plants!!! and bought electric heaters! i heard natural gas heaters are the best but i think its expensive!
@MicksMasdevalliaorchids
@MicksMasdevalliaorchids Жыл бұрын
This would be minimal as it designed for inside a tent and would only be used for emergencies to prevent frost, I’d never consider a paraffin heater as that would damage the plants.
