The Maserati Coupé and Spyder (Tipo M138) are a series of grand tourers[2][3] produced by Italian automaker Maserati from 2001 to 2007. The two nameplates refer to the four-seater coupé and two-seater convertible models, respectively. The design of both models was based on the preceding 3200 GT,[4][5] which was not sold in the US.[6] Due to the confusing nature of the names "Maserati Coupé" and "Maserati Spyder" (which could refer to any coupé or convertible Maserati has made) the Coupé and Spyder are both commonly referred to as the 4200 GT,[7][8] which is an evolution of the prior model name and a reference to the increase in engine displacement from 3.2 L (3,217 cc) to 4.2 L (4,244 cc).[9]
The Spyder was first unveiled to the public at the 2001 Frankfurt Auto Show with the Coupé's debut following shortly thereafter at the 2002 Detroit Auto Show.[10] Sales in the United States began in March 2002 for the Spyder and in May for the Coupé.[11] The introduction of the Spyder heralded Maserati's return to the North American market after an 11-year hiatus. Almost as soon as it was introduced, the Spyder was selected by Forbes as the Best GT for 2001.[3]
The Coupé and Spyder were designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign, who also designed the Ghibli,[12] mid-engined Bora, Quattroporte III and the 3200 GT as well. Interior design was commissioned to Enrico Fumia[13] and was based heavily on the 3200 GT's interior, restyled in 1999. The cars were built at the Viale Ciro Menotti plant in Modena, Italy. In total, 13,423 cars were produced before being replaced by the GranTurismo.[14]
The Maserati GranSport is a sportier version of the Coupé that was first unveiled at the March 2004 Geneva Motor Show.[46] It featured improved aerodynamics, retuned suspension, engine and transmission, and a sportier interior. Frank Stephenson, as newly appointed Director of Ferrari-Maserati Concept Design and Development, was responsible for exterior and interior redesign.[1] An open-top GranSport Spyder with similar modifications was introduced a year later, at the September 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show.[47]
It is powered by the same 4,244 cc, dry sump, 90° V8 engine used on the standard Coupé and Spyder. However, the engine is rated at 400 PS (294 kW; 395 hp) at 7,000 rpm due primarily to a different exhaust system and improvements on the intake manifolds and valve seats.[48] Only the six-speed Cambiocorsa paddle shift transmission was offered, and was recalibrated for quicker shifts. The exhaust, equipped with bypass valves, was also specially tuned to "growl" on start-up and full throttle.[49] The GranSport used the Skyhook active suspension, with a 10 mm (0.4 in) lower ride height. Other than height, the exterior dimensions and curb weight were unchanged from the Cambiocorsa Coupé and Spyder.[50] The GranSport had a claimed top speed of 290 km/h (180 mph), and a 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) acceleration time of 4.85 seconds.[51]
The higher top speed was possible due to a taller sixth gear ratio and more aerodynamic body cladding. New bumpers, side skirts, rear lip spoiler and underbody panels lowered the drag coefficient by 0.02 to 0.33[51] and simultaneously reduced lift.[52] Chrome mesh grilles to the front and rear bumpers, and "Trofeo"-design 19-inch wheels with trident-shaped spokes were other distinguishing exterior features.
Inside, the GranSport was fitted with wide, highly contoured sport seats, which required a slimmer centre console (constructed in carbon fibre) and elastic door pockets. Carbon fibre was also used to for the dashboard trim and on the new thick-rimmed steering wheel. On the coupé, the upholstery materials were leather and technical cloth (in black, Nickel Gray or Metal Blue) on the seat centres, backs and dashboard fascia;[51] the Spyder had an all-leather interior. Seven paint colours were available: solid Giallo Granturismo and Rosso Mondiale, metallic Nero Carbonio, Blu Mediterraneo, Grigio Alfieri and Grigio Touring, and special triple-layer white Bianco Fuji. I have a gransport spyder. It is never out of sport mode and absolutely never in auto. The blips downshifting at 5000rpm are wonderful. It's not flawless, but is certainly a wonderful sport scar.

It's a good thing the stories depreciate this car, because it's an amazing car! and the Formula Dynamics FBW mostly fixes such issues in any case, making the shifts as snappy as any Ferrari or lambo of the era. It's no dual clutch but it's not like the Ferrari 360/430/550/575 or Lambo Gallardo were any better. It's not instant and it's no manual but it's still fun

I have a 2006 Gransport - best way to shift is in sport mode and at 4K rpms and above. Flick the paddle and keep it floored...per the owners manual.

Absolutely right. In normal driving I do a slight lift, bur redline driving has no time for that. The gransport CC box is better than the F1 in the Ferrari 360 modena.

when you purchased the Maserati new, the factory gave you classes on how to drive it. it took me a couple of weeks to get it just right, but that's what exclusive sports car driving is all about. I always have the spot on and never in automatic, its absolute favourite of mine now and I have owned many types of Ferrari cars in the past, but this is a blast that I will never sell, the last real Maserati classic with a fantastic Ferrari engine. dont let Clarkson or demuro put you off, they jumped in and drove it with no clue what they were doing. the car is it's pure class , inside and out, dont sell it mate, it gets better with each passing year. by the way, I had the last shamal to come of the production line and it doesn't compare.

You shouldn’t have to do these mental gymnastics to justify your love for the car. Just say you know it’s flawed, but you love it anyway. This applies to all of the cars with this transmission, it doesn’t make them “bad” AT ALL. It’s just hard to go from a modern dual clutch to this without feeling like the transmission holds it back.

Good review, I have an 06' GS like yours, red with the full leather black interior. I disagree on the auto mode and I never use it. Much softer shifts and definitely more wear on the clutch. Sport mode and manual mode, much more engaging. You're way off on the clutch replacement cost, parts alone is $3500, (flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc, throwout bearing, F1 sensor) average job is $7K today, independent shop little less about $5K. BTW no comparison with the transmission on a Ghibli, there's nothing like the F1 transmission on these cars.

Your video shows how to clutch burns out due to the excessive heat generated from a clutch misuse the auto pre wear. The car needs tobe in sport mode, otherwise it will be in $8,000 dollars every 10,000 miles.

Hey there. Nice video love the 360 vid. With the reverse on the gransport you can come to a stop and put it in reverse with out pulling bot paddles in. And when your ready for putting in drive just push the t stick forward instead of hitting the up paddle.

Im at an issue with this car. I want one but i want it in a manual but the grandsport doesnt come in manual, if you want a manual you have to get a 2002-2004 but that body style is boring compared to the grandsport. I wonder if i could buy grandsport bumpers and swap it

Could not find anywhere the rear brake pads they were out. Another $500 for the rear brake pads just to buy not to install. So I shied away

The automatic mode in that car is absolute crap and the car is designed so that you change gears yourself That man probably doesn't know how to drive other than automatics and that's why he uses automatic mode. Same shit than you buy ferrari 360 and use automatic mode haha! Both have that F1 gearbox, so its better to learn to use car properly. And if you want automatic maserati couple, go to granturismo with zf automatic transmission.
