@@marksitaliangarage Thanks for your reply. The fuel injection system for 1034 has been overhauled by powerprops in the netherlands. They also recommend to substitute the lucas pump by a Bosch one. People say many Mistral engines suffered damage due to gasoline getting in to the oil lubricating the pump, in the earlier examples. That is why many Mistrals and 3500 gti s have been converted to Webers

@@gerardswaen6885 The metering unit and injectors in the film are on there way to Harm at Power props . I have rebuilt the engine in the red Spyder when my computer first bought it 12 years ago. It was damaged from petrol in the oil. The metering unit was rebuilt but I think it’s worn from use of the modern fuel. I have it running well with the other Lucas metering unit from the Maglioli coupe but that’s just for convenience.

@@marksitaliangarage Somehow Harm Klein got hold of the original machines to test and calibrate the metering units. They have not been installed so I cannot comment on the quality of the reparairs first hand yet, but friends of mine were impressed and recommended Harm. I bought #1034 in 2014 as a retirement project. Now at (my) age of 69 there is progress, but with three steps forward and two backwards. The Mistral is a beautiful car, but difficult to restore, since parts are hard to find. Luckily the car was relatively complete.

@@marksitaliangarage A question, if I may. After you rebuilt the engine and installed it in the spyder, did you have difficulties filling the oil pump with oil? In the 3500 GT enigine filling the oil pump gave me great problems. I had to sacrifise an external oil pipe to get the pump filled. Clearly the oil pumps are positioned differntly on these two engines

Yes the slow-mo does a good job of showing the spray pattern and the atomisation of the petrol. We have shot more on the Lucas system so I can explain more about how it works. It’s a good system but every thing has to be working correctly. It’s not very forgiving unlike a carburettor where you can sort of drive around a problem and limp home.

I'm jealous, I never cloud sort a proper Bosch pump and regulator on our old 4l. With crappy US gas and 80+ F traffic it was always fun trying to cool the Lucas windshield washer pump enough to get rid of the vapor lock.

I still have a spare intake manifold, air box and other bits if that would be of any interest.

Yes vapour lock was a real problem ! I think Triumph coiled the fuel pipes around the pump in an attempt to cool it. But I’m not sure how successful this was. The Bosch pump appears to be a great success.

Mark, I have one question and I’ll be glad if you could help me. I tried to make the Mistral that’s here in the shop with the original Lucas “Bomb” fuel pump work, but with no success. I sent this metering unit to Harm Klijn at The Netherlands to make get a full refurbish, he also told us to use MB fuel pump, but he didn’t say which one! Which one may I use?

I’m afraid that I don’t know which Mercedes pump . It would probably be a Bosch . High pressure 110 psi capacity. I have bought the pump as a kit from McGrath Maserati and it works very well. I see that Rimmer Bros in the UK has a similar looking Bosch conversion available. Part number 214347 BOSCH . The VW Golf MK 1 unit is very similar in looks but I don’t think it’s capable of delivering the required pressure. I hope that helps good luck Mark

@@marksitaliangarage These Golf MK I fuel pumps are kindly easy to find here in Brazil because his smaller cousin Gol GTI uses a similar one, and I agree with you when you say it won’t deliver the proper pressure! 😔 A other fuel pump I’ve tried was Porsche’s Bosch (mechanical FI), but it doesn’t work as well! I think my best option is to import the kit from RimmerBros. or something similar. Thank you so much for your time and patience! 😉
