I'm Persian, and my parents throughout the movie picked up a lot of lines that had Arabic influences, like "Shai Hulud" sounds very similar to something that translates to "Lord of the Immortals,"
@misfitmuggleАй бұрын
Yeah Herbert took a lot of influences from the islamic culture of middle east at the time. That's where the lisan al ghaib (Arabic لِسان الغيب;tr: voice from the void, ) comes from. There's also a quite a few terms in the book which may not be mentioned in the movie like the previous wars being named '____ jihad'. It was at the time it was written an allegory to the exploitation that was going on in the middle east by the western forces. How the spice is mined from the desert planet while simultaneously keeping them subjugated and under attack at all times, is very similar to the plight of middle east since the colonization.

So in Dune there are several languages-There is Galach, the official tongue of the Imperium-Which is like this fusion of English with the Slavic Languages. The Fremen speak Chakobsa, which although I believe there is a real life Chakobsa language, it’s not directly linked to the Chakobsa in Dune. Plus each Great House has a unique battle language for their own fighting men. For example, in the movies we have heard the Sardaukar battle language and we have heard the Harkonnen battle language-I know the Atreides have one too, in the book, although we only ever hear Atreides soldiers speak English in the movies (which stands in place for Galach). On top of that we see the Atreides have their own sign language to communicate clandestinely with each other, their staff, their bodyguards etc.
@daratl52388 ай бұрын
Chakobsa is a Northwest Caucasian language. Circassian nobles used a secret language while hunting so their servants couldn't understand them. But in Dune Chakobsa is a mixture of different languages

English is actually a fairly easy language for Scandinavians to learn, since there are so many deep similarities between the basic vocabularies of English and our three very similar Scandinavian languages as well as several similiarities between their grammatical structures. So when we are learning English over here in Scandiland, it often feels as if we already "know" a simplistic older core English in advance and then "just" need to fill in the gaps - without even having to think very much a lot of the time 😊 For instance: S Vi [ve] var här [hairr] först [first] D & N Vi [ve] var her [heir] først [first] E We were here first S Jag [yA(w)g] kan se två [tvoa] unga män [men] gå [go] där [dairr] D&N Jeg [yigh / yaigh] kan se to unge mænd [men*] / mæn [men] gå [go] der [dair] E I can see two young men "go(ing)" (walk(ing)) there. And so on and on 😉

@Puccini000 Thematically, dear friend. Both real-life Chakobsa and the book Chakobsa are secret languages, and knowing them is a big deal to people in the concerned social group.
