For Shadow and Bone, some of the inconsistencies in terms of Slavic culture were deliberate choices. I don't think Leigh Bardugo meant for her books to be accurate, but I can totally see how it would take away from your enjoyment of the series. In the Russian translation of the books, the surnames are gendered to make it less awkward for readers.

@@MashaKnots gotcha! I always found it so cool that a lot of eastern slavs and Baltic people speak Russian in addition to their native language. What's not to like about growing up bilingual!
