Anime Penguin: Into The Black (Ep. 2)

The best anime penguin is back… and, yes, also Spots. To recap Anime Penguin Pt. 1: Our fearless hero, Pen, is headed for the sea in order to avenge the death of his family; his navigator on this anime adventure is talkative seal, Spots. And, boy, do we mean talkative. Spots doesn’t realise that a warrior like Pen travels in silence to conserve their energy for the challenges that lie in his path. Of course, that doesn’t stop Spots from speaking his every thought. They’re a regular Antarctic odd couple, these two.
Still, the seal could come in handy in the Black Crevasse of Eternal Despair, so it might be worth keeping him around. Especially with that creepy bird-woman watching. What’s her deal? Hmmm… ANYWAY, if you’re reading this, it must mean that you typed new anime or anime 2023 or something like that into the search bar, so get ready to become invested in the journey this penguin and seal are embarking on!

First off, this animation is amazing. It perfectly encaptures the look and feel of an 80s era anime with the haphazard movements and exaggerated expressions. It really is impeccable. Secondly, the writing and tone of this series reminds me of an old obscure comic book I used to read called “Samurai Penguin”. It was a competitor to TMNT released in the 80s. Your animation style is basically what I’d imagine that comic book would look like if it was adapted into a show.

For those who don't know Pingu is a stop motion children's television series co-created by Otmar Gutmann and Erika Brueggemann that originally aired in Switzerland, but switched to the United Kingdom in the 2003 revival series.[1] It was originally produced from 1990 to 2000 by Swiss company The Pygos Group (originally called Editoy AG, then later Pingu BV) for SF DRS in Switzerland. It was later revived from 2003 to 2006 for CBeebies by British companies HIT Entertainment and HOT Animation. The series focuses on a family of anthropomorphic emperor penguins who live in the South Pole; the main character is the family's son and title character, Pingu.The series originally aired for four series from 7 March 1990 to 9 April 2000 on SF DRS. It was then renewed for two more series and it aired from 1 August 2003 to 3 March 2006 on CBeebies. Pingu was also nominated for a BAFTA award[2] in 2005. The pilot episode was made on 28 May 1986.
