Hands down the best beginner brewing video I've seen on here. Other videos are so hell- bent on mash temps and having tons of expensive equipment. I often wondered if that truly made a difference, considering our ancestors were brewing beer long before formal brewing equipment supplies came around. I'll check out the other videos made here as well. Thank you master brewer!
@dirtyblond23326 жыл бұрын
After 30 years of brewing, I can brew in a Homedepot bucket, or a stainless conical. The difference comes down to how easy having quality equipment can make the day, and how the equipment reacts and lasts to repeated use (plastic scratches and harbors germs than can nuke future brews). Now, having 10k in brewing equipment, and multiple blue ribbons, I can say that a guy buddy of mine makes an ale in a plastic bucket that is better than mine....

Haven't tried the no sparge method, I think I might attempt this tomorrow instead of a BIAB mash out. Not chilling your beer fast enough is quite concerning though. All the information I have discovered advises that you cool your wort within 40-60min due to bacteria growth. I understand that you'll probably be fine but contamination prevention is important and you can cool your wort with ice and a sink.
@mashhacks4 жыл бұрын
Normally we add the wort to a sealed container, since it's still so hot, most stuff is killed. Can go for months without needing to ferment.

Great video mate! Can you answer a question at a beginner level for me, please? When you have a stockpot, you won't fill it to the top for safety and pouring reasons. Once everybody works out their max water level (and therefore volume), what is the simplest way to find out how much grain to add to the pot for a beer that is made to style and allows for the volume of grain that will be added to the pot?

Ben, I really enjoyed this video. You described each step very clearly, and you introduced me to a couple methods that I’ve never encountered before, eg, rinsing your grains in a separate bucket of cold water and letting your wort cool overnight to room temperature. Well done! I have a couple questions with regard to BIAB. Can I combine BIAB with a cooler mash tun, which has the false bottom for lautering the wort? It seems to me that this combination would make things simpler and it would filter the grains from the wort more effectively. What do you think? Also, would you recommend standard milling with this set up? Thank you.
@mashhacks7 жыл бұрын
Cheers :) You absolutely can use a cooler mash tun with false bottom, but then you don't need the bag. That's just regular mashing and lautering! The bag is just a replacement for a false bottom and a second vessel. As far as milling, if you use a false bottom you should use as fine a crush as you can without getting the mash stuck. I know it's a cop-out answer, but you'll have to experiment. I'd start with a medium-to-fine crush and compensate by using more grain. Keep knocking down the gap in your mill until you get a mash efficiency of around 75-80%. This is usually a pretty good balance.

@mashhacks8 жыл бұрын
+Raul Aguilar Aguas Hey Raul, if you have kegging equipment then filtering is pretty easy, you just use the same beer lines and make sure you buy a filter housing with the same fittings. If not the best you can do is look up adding gelatin to your fermenter before packaging. Thanks for watching :)

Been trying to find easy way to do this, nice video Ben. What grain did you use
@peterbrown79137 жыл бұрын
Aeration is important, if your wort has no oxygen the yeast will not multiply, the wort will have to be totally fermented by the yeast that you pitch.
