In the fifth century, Mesrop Mashtots established a new genre of Armenian music. Together with Sahak Partev, he developed traditional oral and sacred melodies and incorporated them into the earliest liturgical music of the Armenian church. Most notably, they developed the melodies according to the intonations of the Armenian language.
Many people have described their sacred songs as the most soulful music you will ever hear.
Nearly 1,600 years after they were first written, Vahan Artsruni has recorded and arranged Mashtots's sacred songs for this special recording. With a stunning vocal by Hasmik Baghdasaryan, this album is a compelling retelling of the ancient compositions of St. Mesrop Mashtots, the inventor of the Armenian Alphabet.
