I have to say, I got the chills when you sowed the BLM as the literal Black Swan, such a poetic way to put it, even taking that scene from the art film where he seems to be flying away as a metaphor for all those souls who ascended to heaven!! i’m legit shaking from excitement. I think he does it by what songs are popular, not necessarily when they were released. In 2018 he used a queen song (for the bohemian rhapsody movie). Hamilton came out in 2016 and yet it was used in this.

Songs like Dont Start Now, Blinding Lights, Everything I Wanted, Watermelon Sugar, etc. were released late last year and we can’t predict how big they’ll be. So, we try to use them in the year they come out in case they’re not popular in the following year so there’s not as much pressure to use them when there are other options. And if the song ends up being popular (like the examples given), then they get used in both years 😊
