Tutorial on how to fold an origami mask using some basic techniques.
Create a true paper sculpture!
Part 1 shows how to create eyes, a nose and a mouth. Part 2 will show how to shape the head and hairs.
Recommended paper: Arches 300 gsm or more watercolor paper. Vary your paper size and ratio for different results! This will also work with elephant hide but it’s easiest to learn with thick watercolor paper.
I used a 30x30cm square.
This is mostly freefolding with no references, but I chose technique where you can’t go wrong on choosing proportions. Just make sure to make your pleats big enough.

I’ve had this beautiful handmade paper lying around here for a solid 10 years and I’ve never found any use for it... :D 320gsm it’s really thick and it’s just A5 size. So I’m bracing myself for frustration, but the tutorial is so great, I really wanna try it out :)
@PaperFloworigami
@PaperFloworigami 3 жыл бұрын
Oh let me know how it went! I hope you practiced on other paper first. It took me quite a while before I was able to fold this smooth
@sebastianzanzinger
@sebastianzanzinger 3 жыл бұрын
@@PaperFloworigami so it was definitely frustrating at times... I managed to get an okay nose, because this fairly straight bridge wasn’t as hard to do in comparison to the other parts. When I got to shaping the eyes and especially the mouth, it was just sad haha. I either had the paper too dry or much too wet (I think) and couldn’t find a healthy middle. I didn’t practice with other paper first, but I decided this was a good use for it... but I’ll probably order some paper that is at least A4, since I’m hoping this will give me a bit more room for successful shaping. I’m thankful for any more tips! :D
@sebastianzanzinger
@sebastianzanzinger 3 жыл бұрын
@@PaperFloworigami oh and one thing that was so frustrating was that all my shapings turned out much too flat to make out any of the face parts. I wanna make them deeper and more pronounced but just haven’t found out how to do so while keeping everything else intact. Do I have to aim for a more narrow face shape from the start?
@PaperFloworigami
@PaperFloworigami 3 жыл бұрын
Getting a 'flat' face is what everyone struggles with at first. Hard to explain how to avoid it other than really try to exaggerate every fold. Make them much deeper than what seems natural, so the paper sticks out to the back more. To do this you need to use more paper to make every aspect than you think you do at first. So for instance when you start creasing the nose, make the creases further apart so you think you already making a wide nose. This way you can make it more pronounced, and by doing so it becomes narrower again.
@PaperFloworigami

And yeah folding on anything smaller than a4 is just hard. And the mouth is the hardest part for anyone ;)

@PaperFloworigami
@PaperFloworigami Жыл бұрын
Don't really know what paper that is but generally I can say you want anything thicker than printer paper and preferably watercolor paper as it doesn't desintegrate when you wetten it. It's possible with any kind of paper just a lot harder
@shipunuku0309
@shipunuku0309 Жыл бұрын
painted it with acrylic and stuck it together with acrilyc paint. my first attempt did rip, but it was only at the nose, I still cant wet it too much cuz it starting to get too soft, think I will paint the other side too. Thnx

Can you use card stock instead of water color paper?
@stevedeclercq
@stevedeclercq 10 ай бұрын
You can, but it's a lot harder to get a nice result. You should also be a lot more careful with moistening that too; I recommend folding that dry. Check out Fynn Jackson's masks for some models that are more suited for cardstock. Good luck!

For folding masks this is actually the basis many models are built on (as mentioned in the video) so no i'm not catfishing. Nowhere did I say this was easy. Like basic quantum physics you can't expect it to be easy either...
