If youre not aware playing it backwards is actually playing it regularly. In the film the normal hymn is played bacwards as a mockery to god. Here its played normally basically which is a christian hymn. Its why it sounds more welcoming and soothing because its how its meant to be hard and has a religious message. In the film its backwards to symbolize how they are turning away from God.

I'm not. Though that's what they intend it for, 'the lord gave command, keep this faith, and be spared his wrath; his loyal children preserve this holy place'. The meaning is dual, it refers to their lord here, the you know who, who demands 'loyalty' fidelio to be granted life, but also the christian god, who is partly designed with the qualities of that particular saturnine israelite god; though the good spirit people give yahweh also defines him, the god of the bible. 2 described at once, with the intent of implying the darker one, and disguising him as a brighter one, since they hold more awareness of the same words. From a liturgical expert: This is not a hymn, though it is indeed Christian. Both priests are singing (in Romanian) short excerpts from standard liturgical prayers. Here are correct translations: The lower-voiced priest sings: "The Lord said to His disciples: I give you a new commandment" (John 13:34) The higher-voiced priest sings from the Triple Litany of Supplication (said during Holy Week, similar to the Good Friday intercessions of the Catholic and Anglican/Episcopal churches): [To God] we pray for mercy, life, peace, health, salvation, examination, and the forgiveness of sins for the servants of God: worshippers, charity-givers, and well-doers of this holy church." The captions misspell "mantuirea", and the inclusion of "worshippers and charity-givers" replaces the Romanian original of "parishioners and builders" (enoriasi, ctitori), which may be intentional, since Pook created this piece specifically for Kubrick and most likely approached Romanian Orthodox priests to make her own recording of them, rather than using an existing recording which might not have had the correct acoustic or microphones appropriate for her intended use. I point this out because it is one more way in which the text appears to have been altered slightly to place more of an emphasis on money, which would fit entirely within Kubrick's intention for this scene of ostentatious wealth. Some have suggested in their comments that they feel this is intended as a mockery or a "Black Mass". I believe that Kubrick's intent was not necessarily to mock, but more to create an emphatically foreign liturgy. These are real priests singing real liturgy (a realism that is hard for actors to duplicate), but it's in a language most of the people seeing this movie would not recognize, and it's played backward to make sure that even those who speak Romanian or know the Romanian Orthodox liturgy would find it foreign.

@@VoidAbstractI’m gonna assume that there was meant to be more cult stuff and that Alice originally was part of the cult when she was younger and that’s the reason she’s preparing her child to the cult at an early age and has “dreams” where she is set to be in a cult and Bill watches. She stopped going to the cult once she started dating Bill but she still had affiliations with them even though she isn’t present in the cult rituals. Another possibility is that there was supposed to be a feast scene involving children (yk), adrenochrome, and sacrifices (like what happened to Mandy off-screen). Or possibly after where the movie ends, the pair realize their daughter has been kidnapped and they break in to the cult to save her from the cult’s clutches, causing them to both sacrifice them for knowing too much. Or they just x Bill but keep Alice alive, causing an sad ending.

It's not a prayer per say, it's an excerpt or rather two different excerpts from the orthodox liturgy ( the first where one priest is reciting from the new testament and the second in which another is listing the people for which the prayers during the liturgy are going out to or meant for ). You should search romanian liturgy if you wish to find the full version but you'll be disappointed to find that during our service we don't use musical instruments like the organ but rather we have these eyrie chorals. I am not religious but i must admit that when i went to service once for the liturgy i felt being in the presence of something.

@@patriciaidoyagaguzman6630 there could be multiple possible answers. I think in this case, Kubrick might have heard that occultists will often reverse or invert good things to make them evil. For instance, the cross gets inverted, the pentagram that points upward gets turned so that horns are up by Satanists, etc. I don't think in real life, an occult society akin to this one would do such things (as they are probably seen as the conceptions of outsiders rather than those in the know), but maybe some would.

the epic latin vibe, i agree. It can be light like a choir, or intense and serious and epic, with gothic architecture and colorful robes. I was expecting to talk more about it, but all i can compare it to is Greek pagan vibes.
