Masking Guide: For Premiere Pro AMVs/Edits! (Basic)

Here's how to mask in Premiere Pro for edits and AMVs! This easy guide covers the basics only, such as how to use points and curves for efficient masking, plus I provide some tips and advice to retain as much detail as possible! Masking is often used to remove or separate characters from backgrounds in AMV edits. From that stage on, you can do anything like add text from behind, duplicate the layer, add color grading and other stylistic effects (such as uni.vhs for example, which replicates a glitchy effect!)

Hey! I dont know if this works with premiere but in photoshop if you hold alt or ctrl (im not sure which one) and then click on one of the lines that are coming out of a curve nod you will be able to isolate the editing of the curve direction to the selected line without changing the curve direction of the line coming into the other side of the node. So in your example with the hair strand (if this is possible in premiere) you could hold alt and click on the line coming out of the right side of the node and straighten up that curve while keeping the left curve thats coming to the node unchanged. At least this is how it works in photoshop using the pen tool, this helps when you need a curve that ends into a sharp line but its pretty bad when you need to have a long curved line because the 'break' point tends to stand out. Edit: Also if the number of nodes is a problem then using curves will help reduce the number of nodes needed to cover the lines (at least from my experience in masking in ps)

You can mask efficiently by masking the first frame first then move to the last frame and do the middle frame and repeat until it looks perfect

I have made some amv that are 50% made with masking and i can totally understand how time consuming it is, especially in premiere pro, that's why i used them to only make them a transition because masking the whole frames would drive me insane lol 🤣

after effects for advanced editing - requires a powerful build. premiere pro for basic / advanced editing - low & mid end builds work well with it.

The more points you make on the first frame the messier it gets on the subsequent frames if the subject gets smaller. I Hate it when I have too many useless points at the end of the masking if it makes sense. BTW did you say DOMAIN EXPANSION 💀

yes! although after effects has roto brush which is 1000x easier than manual masking. so i recommend using that instead.
