Hello Gareth, I've watched at least 20 videos from this series. I love the way you explain things, it's pretty simple an repetative which helps a lot to me as a beginner. I've went from knowing almost nothing about After Effects to exporting a client work for a mobile app (Loading animation) in one day. I can't wait to proceed with the rest of the series and get to the advanced stuff. Thanks a lot for the help, this is really valuable content.

It doesn't need so much work. Just select the shapes and place both masks in intersect inverted mode. You do not need to pre-comp the video layer.

so instead of drawing the shapes on the Shape Layer I should draw the masks on the SWAN_2.mp4 layer?

Love your stuff. This course seemed overly complex. Importing shape paths, I get it. Also as with the Crown example, basic keying would also allow for cutting the "hole" for video. Yes, there are multiple ways to do things. I am coming from a Premiere background. I am looking forward to seeing if you cover the TRACKING feature, because that is exclusive to After Effects. Btw, your videos and lessons are extremely nicely produced, so keep doing you.

I'm loving your course, man, but this is the first time your lessons have felt rushed/hurried to me. I've worked through this video twice now, and find the explanation of the process of working with the multiple video comp layers, from the masking to the use of effects, to be lacking in your normal standard of clarity...constructive criticism if you care, cause I am a fan. Cheers.

I’m new also But I think he scaled the entire comp So when he pasted the shape , it will become related to the size of the entire comp So he needs to make a new comp which has the same size of the shapes comp Sorry my English isnt that good

I understand why you had to re-compose the video layer for the second time (because you scaled and rotated video so the mask size changed proportionally) but I don't understand why you re-composed the video layer the first time... I did exactly the same steps without re-composing the video layer and results were the same. Maybe I missed something...

Same here. Would be good to know why Gareth did that though. I'm sure there's a reason. Can be confusing when there's too much precomposing going on.
@duongly
@duongly 4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. Maybe, I'm guessing right now, maybe he wanted to keep the original size of the video as backup.
@genesis2303
@genesis2303 4 жыл бұрын
@@duongly also it might be just his way of organizing things. As he shows at one of first videos in course he keeps his project files as tidy as possible (this one I will probably never learn). It also might be habit transferred from photoshop where you should make smart object (it's kind of similar to precompose) every time you want to be able to adjust size of your layer without loosing quality (don't know if in after effects this rule also apply).

Just to organize and having a separate place to alter the way the video looks and having a different place to alter the video in order to achieve a different task, in this case fitting it into the shapes to accomplish a lens effect?

Hi Gareth, Love your videos but got a little confused here. Why did you pre-compose the first time (understand the second time you did it due to scaling). I only did pre-composing once and got the same result. Was it for organization purposes? This is pertaining to the second lesson with the swans in the sunglasses. Thanks

Hi, I'm struggling with transparent pixels of images now and wandering is it possible to apply mask to layer cropping all blank pixels automatically? I can't do this in ps or somewhere else, because I use one premade composition many times, but I changed some layers every time by dragging them with Alt. I need to be sure that they will be in correct place (like I've draw it in ps) with all premade effects so that's why I import psd with only "Composition" and not "Composition - Retain layer size". Maybe you know any solution? Thanks

Because you need to make a composition out of the resized and rotated video first. Else it will past the mask path on there to match the video layer and not with the original mask specs

I find the way he adds the swans to the sunglasses overly complicated. I just turned the opacity of the video sequence down so I could see the picture of the woman wearing glasses underneath and put the mask directly onto the video layer, then played around with some blending modes and opacity to make it look as realistic as in his final product. Also i dont get what the purpose of the black and blue solids are in the first example.
