@@Beardqt Great question! I haven't studied much about botanics, but from what I remember mycorrhizae is a word for any symbiotic root association between fungi and plants. Those interactions are a great research subject, especially because now microbiology as a whole has a new concept: "One Health". While the nutrient dynamic is absolutely true, I don't really know much about the defense aspect. BUT I don't doubt it, because in humans our microbes do play that role and can actively attack strange and/or invading germs. I hope that was helpful!

I wrote a long, informative and interesting reply but it vanished. In short; yes. Some fungi are absolutely crucial for the ecosystem by forming symbiosis with plants (flora would still be limited to slimy algae without the evolutional tug from funga), some are equally important for eating death. And some will give you dandruff, or make you drunk, or save your life from a bacterial infection, or give you a perfectly fluffy loaf of bread, or straight up murder you. That last one is rare though. Don't worry. Be in awe of life and all its intricacies instead.

@@PsychoWingedFish I appreciate your replies, always thankful for new info. I didn't realize and you're right 'fungal root' is what it translates to lol. I'd been confused cause most brands of the fungal inoculant just say mycorrhizae and not much else. The fungi rabbit hole is incredible and because of it I've been going out every night at about midnight to document the fungi growing in the garden because they seem to spread insanely fast when they want to, like I've had a single fungi pop up in a patch of 5-6, then the next night again, it successfully made it all the way around a 5 ft circle of soil in exactly a week in fact I just checked my photos and in exactly 2 days it went from 4 mushrooms to 32 all of that to say that I agree with lobstrosity about just being in awe at the insanity of life, slug army, fungi invasion, and the one raven that sits up top and quietly watches, probably not an omen. probably...
