Classical Gas is not an island though Mason Williams like Jeff Lynne I suppose, have managed to popularize classical music and bravo to them I say. Classical Gas and say Cavatina from the Deer Hunter movie are better known in contemporary pieces but Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo for guitar and orchestra is a 20th century work and has about 5 Classical Gas type guitar passages in it. It is pretty recognizable but worth watching the full 25mins. From the classical guitar POV I find the 2nd movement haunting. If there is one thing one must do before one leaves this world is see Concierto de Aranjuez live. No recording on any high end sound system can come remotely close to the live experience. To anyone who was a young adult or a teenager in 1968 when Williams recorded this & won 3 grammys for it. it was mind boggling. It became an instant giant mega-hit. No one had ever heard a driving classical guitar solo like this before. More than one kid got a speeding ticket driving to his original recording of this. It was at a faster tempo than this and over 40 years later its still the most aired, played, used in tv and film solo guitar instrumental of all time.

I wouldn't call Deborah Henson-Conant "a newbie." She was born on November 11, 1953. She's nicknamed "the Hip Harpist," whose been active since 1985. She is also a GRAMMY-Nominated recording artist and the world's premier electric harpist. At the time that this particular performance was recorded, she had only recently learned how to play the song since it is considered a rock song and thus outside her usual genre of Jazz. Lionel Richie once said you can take just about any song, rearrange it with different instrumentation and make it a classic. It's all in the arrangement. He should know since he's done it.

@Leopold Stotch Eric Clapton has never released his own performance of "Classical Gas". He was responsible for assembling the music used in the film "The Story of Us" in 1999, and he selected Mason Williams's 1970 recording (from the Mason Williams Hand Made album) to be included as part of that soundtrack. A number of online resources, including KZbin and iTunes, list a so-called Eric Clapton version. But No -- that's actually Mason Williams's own solo guitar 1970 recording: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3bRqKmalqejfLM Mason Williams has made several recordings of "Classical Gas". The one that became a huge hit in 1968 had an orchestral arrangement by Mike Post: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4OompJ4l51oic0 That 1968 orchestral arrangement was used as the audio for a couple of music videos broadcast on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. It made me cry is was so good. My father had this record when I was a young boy, and I heard it in the background and never paid much attention to it when I was young. Hearing it now, with the harpist was simply amazing. Thank you Mason and Deborah. You made my night.

I also was subjected to hearing this great piece of music as a young boy whose father played it.

Always, always, always been my favorite instrumental ever. I can remember in high school our class folk guitarist attempting this on a twelve string, always apologizing cause he couldn't quite master it. What a trip seeing it done with the guitar and harp! Incredible! Thank you Billy Smith!

Stephanie Luigon: I also heard CG for the first time in HS. I was about 1/2 done learning this when I stopped guitar lessons..still time tho, right? I’ve always preferred his solo version-for me the orchestra interferes with hearing his playing-but it is well done, never the less. I really enjoyed this arrangement: Hip Harps Rock!

Always enjoyed Mason Williams music and it's an extra bonus to have discovered we share the same August 24th birthdays.

That ear to ear smile she had after playing this with Mason matched my smile as a listener. I'm going to watch this at least four more times before I go to bed. That music is soul cleansing.

This performance plays in my head WAY too often. Loved the song since its inception. The harp and work of Deborah adds so very much. I appreciate her work on this and her amazing talent!!!!!
