Christmas tree is decorated (was) on that day and the kids were asked to look for the first star... when they saw the star , the tree was lit and we all sat down to the table to enjoy the meal... at midnight we would go to church:):) ... and don't forget KUTIA, yummmmy!!!

St. Stans was my family's church back in the day. They had the most beautiful outdoor mangers! I wish I was a kid visiting Chicopee again!

Some common features of Polish Christmass Eve (independently of region in Poland): 1) 12 kinds of food on dishes 2) obligatory: 1 free seat and plate for unknown guest or it can be also interpreted as a symbol for soul of family member who passed away 3) almost obligatory is carp fish 3) soups: red borsh (PL: barszcz pron.: barshch) or fish soup, mostly from carp 4) from confectionery necessarily poppy seed (PL: Makówki, pron.: mackoofkee) 5) boiled sauerkraut with mushrooms and spices 6) compote of prunes 7) vegetable salad with potatoes and some other very tasty dishes without meat (with the exception of carp). Alcohol - there shouldn't be any strong alcohol (generally alcohol doesn't belong to the set of Christmass Eve' food and drinks). Sometimes wine can be/is used. An old tradition is also giving a bit of hay under the tablecloth (the symbol of hay from the birthplace of Jesus) and / or scales from the fish under the plates (thankfully, such a shell can then be put into the wallet). But not everyone cultivates this tradition. Eating Christmas Eve dishes according to tradition begins with the appearance of the first star (if you see the stars. If not, it's just in the evening, eg around 4 PM). On this day, after the supper under the Christmas tree, you look for presents. BTW: most of the tradions can have long roots, cause Poland is 1 of the oldest country in Europe, only Christianity of Poland is over 1050 years old (966 year) ! HAPPY NEW YEAR 2019 ! :)

Nice video. Thank you for explaining Polish traditions to other cultures. However, it's not exactly right. First of all, there are different dishes on the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve all of the dishes should be meatless (apart from the carp fish) and we don't eat 'chruścik' or 'faworki' at Christmas at all. The main dessert is 'kutia' or poppyseed cake and cheesecake. As for pickled herrings, that's the first time I hear you get more luck if you eat them. And we don't eat herring out of the jar as shown but we mix it with sour cream and onion. And the last thing is the amount of dishes. There should be 12, not 13! (Because of 12 Apostles).

This is the first time I've heard about colorful cereals for animals - it's more of a custom for American Poles than for pets in Poland?

My family eats Poppy Seed Soup, zupa makowa. Milk, rice, poppy seeds, vanilla, raisins. Very sweet. Thick. I do not know why we eat this when other families eat zupa grzybowa...mushroom soup ( dried , wild mushrooms) or red beets soup , borscht -barszcz.
