I remember once, during this scene, hearing Mordin whisper ‘I made a mistake’. That single line, out of every character who undergoes a poetic redemption ark, was the most poignant and breathtakingly powerful of them all. The fact that Mordin had so often defended the genophage, the systemic genocide of an entire race, something he contributed to, and then in that moment before Shepard is forced to kill him did I realize that he truly regretted his actions. The race to cure the genophage was one of desperation and repentance, and that singular line is the admittance of all his faults. During my malevolent playthrough, I tried to hit that renegade button, but even as he was walking into that elevator, I couldn’t do it. My Shepard had unflinchingly murdered countless civilians to get his job done, brutally killed unarmed and defenseless soldiers yet I couldn’t pull the trigger on Mordin. Of course he died anyway, but it still tore me up at the end. Upon hearing those words again, in those rancid dreams, did I genuinely cry. I have never cried during any of the games, not even during Tali’s suicide or Legion’s final moments. But Mordin’s desperate act of redemption to die knowing he had left the world in a lighter state than when he was born into it, that was truly tear-inducing. I guess, somewhere in heaven, he would run tests on those seashells. One day.

I have a slightly different concept of the nightmares: In the beginning, we have the boy and his mother, both trying to get to the escaping shuttles. The boy is scared and cannot stop crying, but his mother tries to comfort him as they are entering the shuttle,telling him that everything will be fine and he needs not to worry. Ten seconds after the shuttle takes off, it gets blown apart by the destroyer's beam as Shepard watches this scene with despair. Shepard's nightmares proceed as follows: In the first nightmare, Shepard sees the child and tries to reach up to the kid, but when they meet face to face, the kid burns with tears in his eyes, reflecting Shepard's sorrow that he is not able to save everybody on Earth. In the second one, he sees the forest on fire, surrounded by whispering shadows that remind him of his fallen crewmates and friends (maybe even visions of them), and suddenly sees the person who was killed on Virmire (Ashley/Kaidan) from behind. When Shepard approaches them, they turn to Shepard to reveal a victorious, yet sorrowful expression, after which Shepard wakes up. In the final nightmare, Shepard is yet again in the dead forest, hearing voices that lead him to the forest's edge. There, Shepard finds themselves in a wide plain, almost bare of any vegetation, where, in the distance, they see the mother and boy holding themselves close. As they turn their hopeless expressions to Shepard, from behind them, Harbinger's huge beam accompanied by it's terryfing horn accelerates towards them, as Shepard is being engulfed by white light.

Now imagine how much more impactful it would have been if you’d been chasing the ghosts of your friends and not some random child whose fate I had no say in.
@daniellem11194 жыл бұрын
Probably take my interpretation with a grain of salt, but I don't think the child is simply meant to be interpreted as the "random child we see on Earth die." I think it is a symbol of a lot more. Chasing the ghosts of your friends would be too obvious. Dreams often symbolize internal struggles. To me, the child represents everything Shepard wanted to protect. The weak, the innocent, the defenseless. These symbols are literally running away from Shepard, as the whispers of the dead surround them. It just reaffirms the mental stress Shepard faces as they continue to chase what they want to protect. The child re-appearing on the crucible is another discussion, but I don't think it is the child we see. I think it is a simple manifestation and it manifests that way to Shepard. If the Illusive man was there, maybe it would be a reaper?
@static.65244 жыл бұрын
@@daniellem1119 To me, the child was a visual personification of the Reaper attempts to indoctrinate Shepard. In the Indoctrination Theory, there are many solid clues to support the child being nothing but a manifestation in Shepard's head created by the Reapers to make him give in. The biggest give away was, in the intro, only Shepard notices and sees the kid, everyone else completely ignores him.
@Masterofmultiverse4 жыл бұрын
this 'child' was the reaper fockers indoctrinating us, in our subconscious.
@morphor3 жыл бұрын
@@daniellem1119 I feel like that was the original point of it, but the problem is, Bioware misunderstood the masses, a lot of gamers don't necessarily have attachment to children so won't think of it that way, I'm sure there's a lot who do, but at the time of the original release especially not. Frankly I don't give a damn about some kid, and generally hate children anyways, never having one I don't care for normie bullshit. Edit: also another point is while control shepart, we are neither entirely attached or detached from the narrative.

The dream sequences remind me of Abraham Lincoln’s dreams before his death. He said that he was sailing across a great body of water at an incredible speed in every dream, and this dream was repeated through every decisive moment of the war. To stay alive, yet alone, no one to wage war with, no one to protect anymore. This kid comes in His dream. That kid resembles Faith. A new young human civilization represents future, represents him when he was young and in need of protection. Then his mind wandered to certain commando who saved him while there was a planetary revolt in his home planet, back when he was a boy. This older commando told him while all the chaos ruled around: "there is nothing here anymore boy, no one to save, this people are about to meet God for their hearts got wicked and their Minds are nothing but weapons of mass destruction! Run for woods! They will burn off until you get deep enough to take shelter! Wait there and.. try not to think at all until help arrives. Im sorry.. Iv too became instrument of vengeful and demonic disruptions. I could not contain my contempt, Iv should known better but down the road.. Iv convinced myself I was alone. Now go! This is the only shuttle left! *Shepard(7yo): "But.. I dont want to be alone, who will come for me?! Older commando: "Your parents will my son, look out for a falling star, start a fire, damn!!.. burn the forest that is left when you see one, NOW GO!!" *Shuttle sparks off* Older commando:" You will know true loneliness so the rest of us would never wage war against their own brothers again. May God be your only protection now! One and only, for we are lost sheep, and wolfs we became onto each, when we left the Hand of God" Amen
