I colorized, restored and created a sound design for this video of trolley ride through Downtown New Bedford, MA in 1921 great scenes of an era gone by 103 years ago, Produced by The Union Street Railway Co. commemorating 45 years of service, Fort Phoenix Beach in Fairhaven, MA and Lincoln Park
Video Restoration Process:
✔ FPS boosted to 60 frames per second
✔ Image resolution boosted up to HD
✔ Improved video sharpness and brightness
✔ Colorized only for the ambiance (not historically accurate)
✔added sound only for the ambiance
✔restoration:(stabilisation,denoise,cleand,deblur)
Please, be aware that colorization colors are not real and fake, colorization was made only for the ambiance and do not represent real historical data.

Living in Massachusetts myself and being someone very much interested in local history, I very much wondered what my area looked like a hundred years ago. I’ve looked through old postcards, old city directories and maps and was only able to get a basic sense of what it may have looked like around here a century ago, but this video took it to a whole new level. Quite stunning.

Interesting, at 4:40 the Browne's shop selling soda and cigars has swastikas as its logo. 1920s seems a bit too early for it to be Nazi-related, but it would also be weird if it was meant as the hindu symbol. Maybe Mr Browne just liked the design. He probably got cancelled a decade later, though. Thanks for another fantastic experience Nass.

Surprising to see for sure, though it was a common good luck symbol around the world at the time. This was 1921, but I recently saw a Mickey Mouse cartoon with casual swastikas (decoratively adorning a matchbox IIRC) made in 1930 - I do wonder when the Nazis functionally got a monopoly on its use in the West! (I believe many Hindu temples in Asia still use swastikas to this day)

I was able to figure out the streetcar barn on Weld Street about mile and half north of the downtown. I used to live in Mattapoisett, just east of Fairhaven in the early 60's. I think the trolleys were eliminated in the late 1940's. Union Street Railway was one of the more profitable public transportation companies. Warren Buffett had ownership for a short while when he acquired Berkshire Hathaway at the beginning of his career.

Yes - many reasons for it - the destruction of our cities after WWII probably being the most major, though as well the Influenza pandemic starting in 1918 was taken much more seriously, unfortunately unlike our current one (SARS-Cov-2 +) which is allowed to rage on killing and disabling to no end! By the time of this film (1921) I think their pandemic was about finished. Wild that the original SARS outbreak in 2003 was even more deadly and our society was able to contain it from destroying the world then - it seems like we’ve lost that ability in less than the past 20 years! Very sad!

HISTORICAL NOTE: This must have been an especially happy time as the deadly 1918 Flu Pandemic was over. They lived in terror for 2 years. In fact my grandfather died in the 1918 Flu. He was only 28. I never got to meet him as I was born 36 years later.

Nass, you are the miracle worker. I don't know how you do it but I always love your vids from the past. Maybe 100 years from now, someone will be looking at us and commenting about our strange clothes.

Incredible how our society can radically change. Everyone , for the most part well dressed, all wearing hats. Note the swastikas on the store awning @ 4:42. That's when it was still considered a good luck symbol (Till the Nazis hijacked it). INTERESTING NOTE: Near the end showing the beach......I had an old boss back in the early 1970s that told me that the police would patrol the beaches here in Massachusetts making sure the men did not remove their swimming top for "morality" reasons. I believe it was against the law at that time.

Great job of restoration. I really enjoyed this.. In this video and other similar ones, I have noticed how people walk right out in front of a trolley car! Or so it seems!!

I'm assuming that the celebration was showing the retirement of the horse-drawn trolleys versus the mechanical power trolleys. even the youngest a child shown in this scene has lived his or her life. Even the young women who had about seven and a half minutes for strutting their stuff in their risque swimsuits for the time. Any young men they were wearing full-body swimsuits as well. So this video is a treasure because there's not that many videos around during that time. Then you updated it and I'm assuming preserved it. So the color is a shin makes it even better to watch. Thanks for bringing it to us. And I hope embarrassed reads it and go back and watch it again and say wow 😳😳, if they haven't already. These were great grandparents maybe two or three great back in our ancestry.

@@CAROLDDISCOVER-1983 i only found that out because a search if New Bedford horse-drawn streetcars came ip with the history of that very streetcar: it still exists, 138 years old and hasn’t been driven by horses since 1977 but alive and well in Maine

@@bostonrailfan2427 but thanks for researching that. I find this stuff very interesting. I've traveled all over the country except for the northwestern part of the United states. Now I must admit I've not been north of New York either. My point is that this reminds me of another place. Nothing in common except for its a piece of history that still operating. Out in Kansas there's a place called wamego KS. It's the home to The wizard of Oz museum or at least one of them. But on the other side of the street there's a park. And the deeper you go into this nice park the for the back in time you go. They have a miniature train to scale that goes around and through parts of the park. Now it's been years since I've been there. But at the time it was operated by volunteers. I don't remember it costing anything if it did it was next to nothing. They don't take the children and adults on a tour of the park and is very scenic. Only connection between this Kansas town is preserving history. Well they're both mechanical means of transportation too.

Watching these videos just makes me think how far we have fallen as a nation.. Today, anything goes.. They did dress smart back then.. Today, people dress and look like fruit loops.

Those might've been some of the same streets my grandfathers walked down as kids. In 1920, one would have been 11, and the other 5.
