An unusual choice of song, perhaps, from The Seekers. But once again, Judith Durham turns in an amazing version of this Beegees number.

What is also amazing is that the Seekers recorded this song more than 30 years after they broke up in 1968. Their unique song is still there.

The song was originally intended for The Seekers. Upon arriving in London from Australia (following in the path of the Seekers, who had arrived several years earlier) the Bee Gees had been unsuccessful in getting the song to the group, so they recorded it themselves. During a chance meeting in London between the Seekers' lead singer Judith Durham and Maurice Gibb, Durham learned that "Massachusetts" was originally intended for her group and in 2003 the Seekers recorded the song as a tribute to Maurice following his death earlier that year. The Bee Gees had never actually been to Massachusetts when they recorded the song; they just liked the sound of the name as it was unusual, containing a lot of S's.

Victor "the lights went out in Massachussetts" in the whole northeast including New York where I live in 1965. Thanks for posting I love The Seekers and The Bee Gees ("words and "run to me") are two of many songs that I really like. Again I didn't know The Seekers covered this classic song.

I heard the Gibbs thought of The Seekers when writing this in 1967. Not covered until the death of Maurice Gibb in 2002, using nearly identical string arrangement as the original.

Sehr gelungen. 😊 Neben *Yesterday* eines der besten Cover. Very nicely done. 😊 One of the best covers next to Yesterday.

Not sure how accurate, but I did read that the reason "the Bee Gees had been unsuccessful in getting the song to the group" was The Seekers' manager dropped the ball big time.

This would have been a massive hit for the Seekers if they had recorded it in 1967! The Gibb brothers had an amazing ability to write the best songs!
