The day before we premiered Lil Baby's debut mixtape, Perfect Timing-which features collabs with the likes of Young Thug, Lil Yachty, and Young Scooter-the Atlanta rapper made his first trip to NYC and headed over to MASS APPEAL HQ for an Open Space interview.
"I named the mixtape Perfect Timing when I just got out of prison," Baby explained. "I feel like I got out of prison at a perfect time to do a lot of things. Everything as far as music... Now I can get my foot wet and start participating in a lot of different things."
Comings straight out of Atlanta's Zone 4 and repping the 4 Pockets Full clique, Baby came home from a two-year probation violation bid late last year and got focused on music. "Pockets full process is like a dirt floor process, not a silver spoon process," Lil Baby explains. "Like from the mud, like from the gutter. Facts, I used to sleep on a dirt floor." He's now M managed by Kevin "Coach K" Lee and Pierre "Pee" Thomas of Quality Control Music.
"I always hung around hot artists-Migos, Thug, Gucci," Lil Baby recalls. "I always been in studios, but I always be gambling instead of recording. I shoot craps, cee-lo, whatever. Like really whatever you wanna do with dice... I'm with it. And I'm ready to bet whatever."
He credits Coach K, who helped launch the career of Young Jeezy, with getting him into the music game. "Once I started to put full effort into the rap, a lot of people embraced me," he says. "Gucci called and reached out to me. I already had known him previously, but never on the music tip."
Lil Baby says he sees a lot of rappers trafficking in illusion. "It's a lot of fabricating," he says. "Super fabricating." He's trying to bring a new aspect, as someone who's from "the real Atlanta."
As Lil Baby puts it, "From my side of town, like the trenches, it ain't that easy." Peep the interview up top.
