The first time I have seen someone win with the CCS. In theory it is a "mass over class" thing. But you are still limited to two deployments by default. So, there is no way to actually deploy more from the start. So, the only direction that extra money can go is actually bigger/more expensive units. At least until you get something like Deployment Specialist.

Phoenix's counter are pretty much only themselves. Marksmen are a good checks if you can set them up right but if you're looking to go pound for pound, it's really just other Phoenix that dominate esp in number.

That said, you did just swarm him with small units and he didn't bring out any AoE to counter. So really it's all up to strategy, but my previous comment stands if you're looking for direct unit counters for Phoenixes.
