La Méditation de Thaïs is a symphonic intermezzo from the opera Thaïs by French composer Jules Massenet on the libretto eponym of Louis Gallet who tells a story that takes place in Alexandria in the 4th century. Athanaël, a monk, tries to convert to Christianity Thaïs, courtesan and pagan priestess dedicated to Venus. The work is characterized by a mixture of sensuality and Sulpician religiosity which underlines a dramatic structure based on oppositions such as eroticism and holiness, seduction and renunciation. The piece is written for solo violin and orchestra in D major. It is quite possible that Massenet wrote this piece with religious intentions, the tempo indication is « Andante religioso », which means that he intended the piece to be performed religiously or to be literally with an emotion based on religion because beyond the dramatic work, the underlying treatment evokes well reconversion to monotheistic religion. The work opens with a short harp introduction, the solo violin entering quickly with the motif. After the violin plays the melody twice, the piece enters a section marked « animato », which gradually becomes more and more impassioned (wrote poco a poco appassionato). The climax is reached passionately at a place indicated « poco piu appassionato » and is then followed by a short cadenza-like passage from the soloist and returns to the main theme. After the subject has been replayed twice, the soloist joins the orchestra playing harmonics in the upper register while the harp and strings play quietly below the solo line. The Meditation is, in the words of critic Ernest Newman : « a perfect musical portrait of the emotional process that leads to comfort and to the remittance in question. » Massenet's music is of power evocative and of rare penetration psychological in this lyrical world. *Lucien*

MERCI !

Jules Massenet (1842-1912) was born in Montaud, a village in the north of the city of Saint-Étienne, in France (58 km Southwest of Lyon). The local School pf Music and Opera House have been named after him. His christian name, Jules, is slighty outdated and it made me laugh, but I must admit some of his works are great chefs d'œuvre. There is an anecdote about this great artist. As he was professor at the Conservatoire National de Paris, a woman from the high bourgeoisie asked him during a very selective cocktail about her daughter who studied singing at this school had managed during a concourse in which she had to interpret a lied. The mother asked "dear professor, how has my daughter sang her lied ?" pronouncing this german word wrongly "liayd" (as if it were a french

... word, showing by such doing she had no culture. The maestro answerd her immediatly : (she sang it) "comme un pis, chère Madame, comme un pis !" (deforming the french expression "comme un pied" which mean "awfully badly, a total failure"). The expression is utterly comic, because the two words exist in french : "pied" means "foot", as for "pis", it means "the udder of a cow" 🤣.

@@odilebeltran3952 The Mannheim on-stage performance is garbage. The performance on his CD "Classic Romance" is much better, but, in part because "Meditation" is not a romantic work, one would be better off listening e.g. to Chloe Chua, who perfectly captures the transcendent rapture of Thais' vision of God and the path to salvation.

@@odilebeltran3952 I do not think he is a violinist of the first rank. (Sorry! I guess you are a big fan.) I listen to him only when he performs a work, such as the Meditation, that I am studying, in which case I listen to pretty much all performances of the work on YT, including any that he has given. (I must have listened to 100+ performances of Meditation on YT. I think that the most rewarding is the performance Chloe Chua gives in rehearsal with the SSO.)
