King Umberto's body had to be stored in a bathroom of the villa following his assassination - this was because the heir to the throne Victor Emmanuel was holidaying on his yacht in the Mediterranean when the murder occurred and they had to wait for his return before having the funeral. Presumably ice was used to stop the body decomposing as artificial refridgeration was still to be invented.
