John from www.growingyour... visits one of the largest aquaponics farms in the USA in Half Moon Bay, California to give you a complete tour of their operation and how they have increased their profits by designing systems to reuse all the waste on site and create additional revenue streams.
In this episode, you will learn more about Ouroboros Farms, an aquaponics farm in the Bay Area that has been growing vegetables and fish for the past 7 years. You will learn about some of their successes and failures as well as how they have designed their farm to educate people about aquaponics, but also produce a viable business model on how to generate cash flow from many different aspects of the farm besides just selling the vegetables and fish, which is what most farms do.
John will take you on a full tour of the farm, and how their aquaponic system works that has been designed to maximize vegetable production while using the least amount of fish food as possible.

The original time-tested and time-proven aquaponics system is the Incan Chinampa system and the Floating Gardens of Lake Inle of Burma! Why you Americans has a tendency to make all things unnecessarily complicated and sophisticated when mother nature has already shown the path to high abundance if you will just study it's ways and use it's ways and natural processes in a modified way that will harmlessly amplify it's natural forces to further boost yields and quality and nutritional value and safety?!

This is absolutely a dream scenario. Building a 200 gallon system in my living room right now. Just in time! This dream needs to be the norm for all communities, as normal as fast food restaurants. Time to reduce the food miles for all.

@@Seriouslydave 1 cubic meter of water or 250 gallons with 1 gallon = 4 liters weights about 1 metric ton. Better build it outside of your house in your garden with a make do greenhouse cover attached to your house. One idea is to have a flexible silicone rubber impregnated 3 dimensional industrial strenght fiberglass fabric as an interlayer between two chainlink mesh with a galvanized steel structure to hold it in place.

I am currently creating my own home aquaponic system and am really excited about it….also going to put it in a greenhouse environment. Really enjoyed this video…so enspiring. I am using a grow bed system with a 400 gallon fish pond. I have done the cycling and do water testing. Going to buy a small worm system to use the worms in my grow beds. Thanks for all your valuable information. Sharon

This guy's aqua system is the closest I've seen to my Utopian system, definitely less bling and flare, but his utilitarian methods are close. He is even going in my soil/hydro direction, a bit different than my designs, but it's a sign he knows the truth about natural hands off systems, every forward cutting edge thinker is going hybrid system. He has a business, I am thinking a lifestyle, low maintanence, natural. In 2001 I hammered out my Utopian ideas, most people are not very receptive though, I've told my ideas to others and they don't even get it. They are urbanized, chasing money in the city, losing their job sometimes, my Utopian ideas were designed to free you up to work on wonders instead of slaving for an economy. He's missing ducks.

What would be great would be having a farming program for students. I grow carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, peas, peppers, and herbs at home. It helps kids understand not just where their produce comes from but it also teaches them the hardships of growing food. Mega props on this video.

Hey John! Great video, thank you! Love love loved it. I have a few questions, if you could help me answer them, that would be great: 1. What are the fans for that we see at the raft beds? 2. Which stage of the Aquaponic water do they use for the SIPs and how often do they feed them with water? Thank you again so much.
@tonysaladino1062
@tonysaladino1062 3 жыл бұрын
The fans are for the plants to develop more robustly, mimicking wind helps to keep them from getting weak of stem and keeps moisture suspended in the air rather than condensing on the plants where it could lead to mildew, diseases or rot. The same water went into both the SIP and the raft beds, I don't think they said how often they had to add to them.

Exécutive Joseph Of course there is an excuse, which is to make money as a business at the value the local economy demands. Quite a few have said that is a good price for what we offer But I do recommend that people buy the book and build it themselves so they know how it all fits together and they’ll be more vested in it as their own creation.

I've not seen corn in an aquaponics system but I'm wondering if corn could grow in the raised beds with soil on the top?

ive noticed most plants grown with aquaponics are green.. i guess thats because of the high nitrogen in the fish waste... kinda a bummer to learn this since my goal is to grow strawberries... i raise red wigglers would they be a great addition to the aqua set up?

I've watched a ton of aquaponics videos and I follow your videos quite a bit. One thing that I have not figured out, yet. Why haven't I found any that use their composting worms for fish feed?
@josholin31
@josholin31 4 жыл бұрын
Coming from a person who has been in the aquarium hobbie. Worms are high in protein. Which would create ammonia spikes(NH3) as it decomposes. Which in theory the plants could absorb. But not to the extent of using it as the main food source. Also some bacteria eat such proteins, which also are the ones that create root rot. I've been testing ammonia with my fresh 125 gallon planted aquarium. I should really be testing the parameters more frequently. But the test is whether vaccuming the gravel is really necessary. But still cleaning out the sump. I did have a major die out because black beard algae got in. Which was killing the plants because the leaves were too covered, and the decomposing leaves caused ammonia. But now I've managed to get rid of the black beard algae. So now a more controlled study. Because plenty more types of fish eat green algae.

@@josholin31 this is some huge info. Have you considered making videos on aquaponics experiments?
@josholin31
@josholin31 4 жыл бұрын
@@underdude9818 maybe when I get my own property. My wife and I are staying with her grandparents until we have enough money for said property. I'm lucky I was allowed room for my aquarium and hydroponics system. I could maybe repurpose the aquarium, and build a floating grow system on top. But I think there's already enough weight on that side of the house... if not too much already for a 100+ year old house. Lol Just to clarify my experiments are involving aquatic plants. Not even the black beard algae would be an issue for the plants, if no light gets to the roots in a aquaponics system.

@@josholin31 I closed the loop on my aquaponics system by running two composts, one for making soil and one for encouraging creatures through anerobic composting. I dug the maggots, beetles and other creatures that would grow in that compost was used for the fish feed. I never had problems with nitrogen spikes, but the fish poop was a major by-product after it had gone through the biological filtration process.

It makes me wince when you refer to the fish "poop" as the nutrient. It isn't Fish "poop" (Solids) are filtered out and removed unless there is a demineralization system installed. The fish waste that is converted via bacteria to Nitrogen is actually ammonia excreted through the gills of the fish. I just thought you should know.

Ever heard of chinampas and phyto-bioremediation with plants? They are all passive systems and are time-tested and time-proven for thousands of years! Their yields are consistently 3 times that of their land-based counterparts while still using only natural genetic heirloom crop plants varieties. The key to real profitability is the use of passive and self-regulating natural food chain cycle ecosystems used in growing medicinal herbal pharmaceutical crops and food crops and fuelwood crops and duplicated by the chinampa method. The chinampa method can produce both conventional crops for medicines and food and edible fish and edible fresh water clams and edible aquatic plants. Why make things harder when you can make things simpler and self-contained once you got the food chain cycle ecosystems up and running to support the agricultural and aquacultural part of the entire close-loop and close-cycle food chain cycle which will makes things very profitable and provide very safe and high quality crop products and fish protein products like tilapia and carp.
