@@Seriouslydave 1 cubic meter of water or 250 gallons with 1 gallon = 4 liters weights about 1 metric ton. Better build it outside of your house in your garden with a make do greenhouse cover attached to your house. One idea is to have a flexible silicone rubber impregnated 3 dimensional industrial strenght fiberglass fabric as an interlayer between two chainlink mesh with a galvanized steel structure to hold it in place.

If you want the best aquaponics system online then go here now: AquaSystem.xyz I don't know about the rest of the fish, but the temperature range for tilapia are way off. I keep mine at 80-85F. Never below 55F

This guy's aqua system is the closest I've seen to my Utopian system, definitely less bling and flare, but his utilitarian methods are close. He is even going in my soil/hydro direction, a bit different than my designs, but it's a sign he knows the truth about natural hands off systems, every forward cutting edge thinker is going hybrid system. He has a business, I am thinking a lifestyle, low maintanence, natural. In 2001 I hammered out my Utopian ideas, most people are not very receptive though, I've told my ideas to others and they don't even get it. They are urbanized, chasing money in the city, losing their job sometimes, my Utopian ideas were designed to free you up to work on wonders instead of slaving for an economy. He's missing ducks.

What would be great would be having a farming program for students. I grow carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, peas, peppers, and herbs at home. It helps kids understand not just where their produce comes from but it also teaches them the hardships of growing food. Mega props on this video.

cool idea...i do eat wild caught fish but a big no for me is farming fish in a barrel. goldfish are good for aquaponics as they are heavy feeders and you could give them a nice, confortable pond-like environment.

The fans are for the plants to develop more robustly, mimicking wind helps to keep them from getting weak of stem and keeps moisture suspended in the air rather than condensing on the plants where it could lead to mildew, diseases or rot. The same water went into both the SIP and the raft beds, I don't think they said how often they had to add to them.

That's about right as far as materials, maybe around $700 with the Redwood. But we come to your house, consult on where to put it, and build the whole thing for you so that the day we arrive it is operating you can start cycling it. Also comes with our Aquaponics 1 & 2 classes which you can take as many times as you like until you feel comfortable doing it yourself.

Hey John. I'm down here in the southern most tip of Nevada, elevation 2500 ft. Have you had any luck, in Vegas, growing chayote, or kiwano or that small, tiny cucumber that looks like a watermelon? I'd like to grow these three on hog wire, over and around my garden plot to act as a wind and sun break. Any experience with these?

I like the Aloe's. I give mine full summer sun every year outside if possible, within three years they get that big and bigger, and bloom yellow blossoms to signal a mature plant. Within 1 good year I had some that size alongside my cannabis feedings

Coming from a person who has been in the aquarium hobbie. Worms are high in protein. Which would create ammonia spikes(NH3) as it decomposes. Which in theory the plants could absorb. But not to the extent of using it as the main food source. Also some bacteria eat such proteins, which also are the ones that create root rot. I've been testing ammonia with my fresh 125 gallon planted aquarium. I should really be testing the parameters more frequently. But the test is whether vaccuming the gravel is really necessary. But still cleaning out the sump. I did have a major die out because black beard algae got in. Which was killing the plants because the leaves were too covered, and the decomposing leaves caused ammonia. But now I've managed to get rid of the black beard algae. So now a more controlled study. Because plenty more types of fish eat green algae.

@@underdude9818 maybe when I get my own property. My wife and I are staying with her grandparents until we have enough money for said property. I'm lucky I was allowed room for my aquarium and hydroponics system. I could maybe repurpose the aquarium, and build a floating grow system on top. But I think there's already enough weight on that side of the house... if not too much already for a 100+ year old house. Lol Just to clarify my experiments are involving aquatic plants. Not even the black beard algae would be an issue for the plants, if no light gets to the roots in a aquaponics system.

@@josholin31 I closed the loop on my aquaponics system by running two composts, one for making soil and one for encouraging creatures through anerobic composting. I dug the maggots, beetles and other creatures that would grow in that compost was used for the fish feed. I never had problems with nitrogen spikes, but the fish poop was a major by-product after it had gone through the biological filtration process.

It makes me wince when you refer to the fish "poop" as the nutrient. It isn't Fish "poop" (Solids) are filtered out and removed unless there is a demineralization system installed. The fish waste that is converted via bacteria to Nitrogen is actually ammonia excreted through the gills of the fish. I just thought you should know.
