John G Moore Your lyrics are the best representation I’ve seen. The ‘You’re stumbling down’, is clearly 4 very distinct separate words as ‘You’re stumbling in the dark’. Some vids even reduce this line down to ‘Stumbling down’ and miss the ‘You’re’ entirely. And theirs still a lot of controversy over whether it’s ‘breath’ or ‘pray’. I here it as ‘prayer’. And then theirs the topic of whether the original video is about abortion. I’ve heard this song was in the process of being written when Elizabeth Frazer heard of Jeff Buckley’s death, so since she’d already started writing those lyrics before she heard the news, she may have adapted then to her feelings once she heard the news of his death. Plus, massive attack re-jigged the lyrics also. Personally I think the video to this is just a good marketing vid, which has nothing to do with abortion, but it’s widely theorized as this. It’s on my most beautiful playlist, but I don’t like how it’s been associated with abortion this way. Until you here the writer state that’s the case we should never assume it is, when it’s such controversial subject which may be particularly poignant to it’s listeners and their own person experience if any. Thank you for your version of these lyrics as there are so many vids showing wrong lyrics and then examining them based on those blatantly wrong words.

Patman Patmanson It could be? Elizabeth Fraser is known for singing in a way that makes words sound like other words so who knows unless the lyrics are printed on the album or CD info..? And the words "pray", "breath" or even "prayer" all sound so alike when you sing along with the vocal, it could be 'officially' any of them. The main thing is it's an incredibly beautiful song. One of the most beautiful I've ever heard ❤️

Love and laughter are the most natural and human emotions we have. We have so much more in common than what separates us. Yet we’re told to be suspicious and pessimistic of others. We’re all human, we all have stories to tell, and we all deserve a place by the fire. I love you all.

The lyrics are wrong. Contrary to popular opinion, she's saying, "Feathers on my breath." Listen to José Gonzalez's cover of the song, he says, "Feathers...". Also, the last line is not, "You're stumbling down", it's "He was tumbling in the tow." This song is about the drowning death of her friend, the singer Jeff Buckley. To tow means to drag; so she's describing how he drowned. This song is about loss, confessing her love, and the need to move on after mourning ("Black flowers blossom.")

My interpretation, love is a doing verb so it is in continuous action. And she has no fear in carrying the word love on her breath meaning she lives love. Love keeps her in light motion. The black flowers blossoming is her love for a black man or woman who she is not scared to love. Her actions are reflected in the mirror of water. Teardrops on the fire is letting go of an emotion that evaporated after falling on the fire. Stumbling down is falling deeper in love.
