The Sears in my city is probably going to suffer the same fate. The mall owner is currently lobbying the city to change the zonage so that they can build a mix of residential and office spaces.

Hi Jonathan. How is the Sears doing in your town? I did a quick search. They are all gone in Canada, and only 11 left in the States. Thanks for sharing.

@@bobjonesrealtor7756 I'm in Canada and its been closed down for years. It was empty for a long while. Eventually, they ended up renting it to a low end clothing store. The mall did end up taking a hit during the pandemic, but its the largest mall in a 50km radius and is located right next to the highway, so despite hitting a rough patch during the pandemic, so business was bound to pick back up. Given that this mall serves the entire region, it was never really threatened in any serious way. The mall is almost back to full capacity other than the Sears which is only partially occupied. The plan to add residential and office isn't about the state of the mall itself. Its about maximising revenues on the property.

The property looks like an opportunity for a shiny new 15 Minute City. Everything within 15 minute walks, doctors, sustenance, quarters, all supplied by the Liberal government where you won’t own anything and you’ll be happy! Cities get big funding for these projects. Kingston is building one right now. Has Windsor got a 15 Minute or “Smart City” yet?
@bobjonesrealtor7756Ай бұрын
That's interesting. How far have they gotten with it Mike? Are they building from scratch or converting an established neighbourhood? Windsor is actively pursuing the development of smart city features, but it has not fully implemented a "15-minute city" model yet. This is what I found. Smart City Initiatives Windsor's Civic Esplanade project includes various smart city features such as enhanced lighting, audio systems, Wi-Fi, signage, and wayfinding technologies. These elements aim to create a more connected urban environment and enhance public spaces, particularly around City Hall and the Riverfront area1. The city is exploring how these features can integrate with existing community resources to improve connectivity and usability for residents and visitors. Thanks for the post.😎👍

Hi Mike. I did a search for Kingston's smart city and this is what I found. Kingston, Ontario is actively developing its smart city initiatives to enhance urban living and improve city operations. The city has embarked on several projects and partnerships to transform itself into a more technologically advanced and efficient municipality. Smart City Partnership with Bell In 2018, Kingston City Council approved a public-private partnership with Bell Canada to implement a Smart City platform5. This initiative aims to leverage internet-connected devices and data collection to improve various aspects of city management7. The project focuses on: Energy Management: Monitoring and optimizing energy consumption in city facilities78. Asset Tracking: Keeping track of municipal assets more efficiently78. Data Collection: Gathering and organizing information from connected devices to inform decision-making7. Pilot Project Implementation As part of the smart city development, Kingston launched a pilot project with Bell to provide a facilities management system4. This system is designed to help city staff operate municipal facilities more efficiently and effectively through digital solutions4. Recognition and Future Plans Kingston's efforts in smart city development have not gone unnoticed. The city was named one of the world's top seven "intelligent communities," highlighting its commitment to innovation and technological advancement6. Ongoing Development The City of Kingston is continuing its journey towards becoming a smarter city with plans extending to 2051. Key aspects of this ongoing development include: Population Growth: The city is preparing for an expected population increase to 220,000 people over the next 25 years1. Integrated Planning: Kingston is creating a new Official Plan and an Integrated Mobility Plan simultaneously, which is a first in the city's history1. Community Engagement: The city is forming a Community Advisory Group to ensure diverse voices are included in the planning process1. Long-term Vision: Both the Official Plan and Integrated Mobility Plan are expected to be completed by mid-to-late 2026, setting the stage for Kingston's smart city future1. By focusing on these initiatives, Kingston aims to create a more connected, efficient, and sustainable urban environment for its residents in the coming decades.

The "smart cities" or "15 minute cities" are going everywhere worldwide not just here with our Liberal government. As you said "you will own nothing and be happy" that's what the governments' and the world organizations want and have clearly on their websites..

Hi Rusty. You are probably right. It got me wondering when asbestos was banned in Canadain building. I did a quick search and this is what I found. - In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Canadian government began introducing regulations to reduce asbestos use due to growing health concerns. This led to a sharp drop in asbestos-containing materials produced after 1981 - Sears opened in 1970 so a good chance it was in the insulation or flooring. That said they would have to abate the asbestos before tearing the building apart, I believe. Interesting comment. Thanks!:)
@mariposavioleta9007Ай бұрын
@@bobjonesrealtor7756 it was in 1985-90 (most materials in 85 then fibrous insulation in Dec 90) that it was banned in homes but only in 2016 did the government commit to banning it in commercial buildings. "In December 2016, the Canadian government announced a commitment to ban asbestos and asbestos-containing products by 2018. Where is asbestos used? The construction industry and commercial sectors have used asbestos in many products, including: Cement and plaster."

Even without asbestos they should have the interior properly taped off so that workers don't breathe in the toxic dust from construction like they are now with the tarping not being sealed

@bobjonesrealtor7756Ай бұрын
Hi Ryan. Since I was a boy, sixty years or so. I remember ther Firestone advertising in the windows, so, I did a quick search for you and this is what I found; Yes, Sears did sell Firestone tires at their automotive service centers, including the one in Windsor. However, this changed when Sears halted the sale of Firestone tires due to safety concerns related to certain models that were under investigation for being linked to multiple accidents and fatalities. If I make a mistake I do expect to be called out on it. Constructive critisim is always welcome. It's how we learn. Seems we were both mistaken. They did market Firestone tires, but it was a SEARS auto center. Thanks for the comment. :)
@a.p.1299Ай бұрын
it originally was an automotive repair shop under the sears name and included gas pumps. I got my gas there because it was cheaper the other gss stations in the area.
@mariposavioleta9007Ай бұрын
You must be new then because I bought tires there back in the 90s-early 2000s. After Sears stopped selling tires there that's where they stored the lawnmowers but that was not what it originally was used for.
