Brüggen Glacier is also known as Pío XI Glacier. It is in Bernardo O'Higgins National Park - in southern Chile; Bruggen is 41 miles in length - the longest glacier in the southern hemisphere outside Antarctica. The glacier is named after the German geologist Juan Brüggen Messtorff. The glacier is growing in size - length and height - unlike many other glaciers. It is part of the Southern Ice Field, a large mass of continental ice, the third largest in size after Antarctica and Greenland.
