When we lost power in a Ice Storm in Tulsa a few years ago we put our food outside. Everything stayed nice and cold. We didn’t lose a thing. So sorry that happened to all my Texas friends.

15 year or so when we had that ice storm I was out 9 days. I put all my pickles and stuff like that in a ice chest and put them in my separate garage. The ice was still in the chest the day we came back home.

I live in a snowy part of the country and we lose power from the snow a lot. Your condiments would have been fine to keep. Anything vinegar based, like ketchup, mustard, Italian dressing etc. would have been om to keep. Last time we were without power for 4 days we just used snow in coolers to keep our stuff cold. Since we got 7 feet in 7 days we had plenty.

We were stuck on side of road due to the ice for over 24 hrs. We are truck drivers and it was terrible! It took us 3 days to get to Laredo from Indiana which would normally take a little less than 24 hrs with good roads. We are thankful for all those who helped us (truckers) out there. Things are getting back to normal slow but sure.

We had a water contamination issue the week before in our town, which actually turned out to be a help in that we had a good supply of water beforehand. We somehow didn’t end up losing power, but we’re as prepared as possible for it, but we conserved as much as possible and made what we had stretch so others who lost everything could get enough to last until the supply chain could catch up. Crazy how just over a week ago things were so different. Glad y’all are okay. Love from West TX. ❤️

We had long lines at all the registers. Our store has limits on several items to two. I was able to go to work everyday during the snow and ice because my husband drove me. I’m so sorry y’all have had to suffer through such a horrific storm, loss of power and water but thankfully it’s over and you can get back to some normalcy. What a shame so much food went to waste but hopefully, if this ever happens again god forbid, you’ll know better how to deal with the issue, like packing your ice chests with foods and putting them outside in the freezing cold to keep, I’ve done that in the past bc it gets so cold here in So.Jersey, during winter but I know y’all aren’t used to dealing with severe winter cold and snow storms. You’ll get back to where you were as soon as your stores are stocked, you’re such a good planner and executor of tasks and I have faith in you bc you’re an awesome mom and homemaker. Stay safe, sane and blessed♥️💫✨👼🏻✨💫♥️

Of course part of the reason the stores aren't stocked is that the suppliers & retailers wanted to make sure the power was going to stay on before they could restock and not have food go bad. Yes check with you homeowners insurance about covering your food loss. In Vermont we have had loss power for 5 days because of snow storms but we're use to having alternative measures.

Another thing I did was I bought a common gas burner end it has or you can get the butane cans that you pop right in and that you can cook anything that you want hot and get a coffee press and you always have hot coffee of course you got to have your mugs or your a coffee cups that are disposable same way with disposable those forks and plates. Make sure you always have plenty of paper towels on hand toilet paper on hand and Kleenex and your dish soap. Hope that helps you.

Glad you're all ok. lessons learned for everyone, anything with a large amount of vinegar or heavy in lemon/lime juice, you would of been fine leaving out of the fridge for a while, mustard would of been fine. same with your store bought lemons and lime juice. We take coolers outside with food in them during winter and pack them full of snow if there is any. Or just leave it opened lid at night on the outside table, close it during the day. Sometimes just take the whole pot, tie down the lid, put it right out there on the back table, freezes solid. Keeps well perfectly fine all day. In my area we can get down to -20F. It can even snow on the 4th of July. No, I am not up in Canada or Alaska.

I bought heavy whipping cream too (I'm in Dallas). We normally use half n half, but we are mixing the heavy whipping cream with our shelf stable milk (available at Dollar Tree and we keep it on hand) to make our own half n half. Lol. I highly advise buying some of the shelf stable milk at Dollar Tree to keep on hand for when you run out of regular milk. It tastes fine and is available in whole, 2%, & skim.

We're up above you in Nebraska. We had temps over 30 below zero, so I can imagine it had to been rough for you folks down south. My brother lives in San Antonio as well, but he's used to snow and blizzards. I wouldn't have thrown away some of the condiments. Our fridge is breathing it's last breath, our fridge doesn't work and our freezer is part freezer and part fridge so we have to be careful where we put things. We have ketchup, mustard, some non dairy condiments in the cupboard. Butter I don't have in the fridge but it's in a cool place. If you have a attached garage and it's cool in there, you can put some condiments in there or in a plastic container in the garage. I don't know how quickly it warmed up there, but another option is a tub (yes in your house, even have filled the tub with snow so the kids could play without going outside) full of snow or some things can be put in a vehicle sitting outside. Glad you guys made it through the cold and things are looking up again.

We typically buy a bag of frozen berries, and some frozen mangoes and avocados as well. I live at the top of the mountains in Fawnskin Ca .One year we had 6 days of heavy snow and no power. Our well is electric so no water and we could not get out.My retired police officer husband was on oxygen due to heart failure so it was a really hard 6 days to the 7th day. We did have gas stove and I filled huge soup pots of snow then boiled and used to flush toilets. It was so cold both fridges and freezers stayed ice cold and nothing spoiled. We had plenty of food and paper plates and disposable cups forks and knives.I used portable oxygen off and on every few hours so my main worry was my husband. After that I got a water machine and water delivered 3 medium size water containers and individual drinking bottles. We enclosed our deck after snow storm with windows and door for snow was piled up on front door Like for you it was a hard time. Four years later I lost my husband. He had a hard time.We were married 38 years and he was a police officer for 33 years.. Thanks for sharing your shopping 😊🛍️

first of all, a huge Thank You to your husband for his job of keeping us all safe. Police Officers have a very hard job. And so sorry that he passed can only imagine how much you miss him everyday. I know where Fawnskin is as I grew up in the area and now live in OC. In the snow we also used the snow for water supply and to keep foods cold. I do have a water purifier as well. Do you stock up on food? Do any canning? My sister lives in Paradise, CA where they have rolling blackouts, no electricity for 2-3 days a week, she got a small generator for her refrigerator and also to keep some lights on. Bless you and stay safe

I hope things are starting to look a little better for y’all and everyone in Texas! For future reference, you don’t need to throw your butter away after the power has gone out. With the first day of our power being on for less than 5 minutes every hour, then 2 days of no power we ultimately decided to not chance anything and just toss it. If you want to make your juice stretch farther, cut it by a third, up to half, with water. Yes, you’ll be using some of your bottled water, but you’ll extend the amount of juice used by a day or two. Another good thing to keep on hand is Mio or Crystal Light liquid enhancers to flavor the bottled water.
