I definitely don't think Kid is dead. Back in 513, after Kuma split up the strawhats, Oda used almost identical phrasing. "Grove 12, Sabaody Archipelago, Grand Line.That day, The Strawhat Pirates led by Captain Monkey D Luffy... were eradictated.' We know the crew wasn't killed or destroyed, so I imagine the same will be true for Kid and his crew. Considering Shanks was inquiring about his health before the fight too, meaning he probably didn't want him dead. It's unlikely given Kidd's personality, but I wouldn't even be shocked if the next time we see Kidd he's part of Shanks' fleet. Shanks likes adding misfits to his fleet after all, so maybe they'll have a dynamic similar to what Whitebeard and Ace had early on, where Ace was only there to get strong enough to kill Whitebeard, before it developed into real loyalty.

I can't believe it takes this man an hour to read 20 pages lol. It shocks me today as much as it did nearly a decade ago when I first discovered KoL. You know it took multiple pirate crews multiple tries to topple Kaido, right? Luffy had to die to get 'er done. Prior to those events, Kaido and Shanks collided with each other earlier in the story. Kaido smashed and imprisoned Kidd with such ease as well, except he was constantly trying to submit other pirates rather than outright destroy them. I think Oda takes a lot of care into the balance of powers in this story. I think the emperors are much closer in power than most admit. We like to think about the opponents getting stronger the further we get into the story, but I don't think that' the case here. There might be minor differences but what stopped Shanks from removing a destructive force like Kaido any earlier in the story? He probably just couldn't.

Kidd v Shanks gotta be the most dumb fight in One piece. Law v Blackbeard fight made far more sense. Blackbeard targeting whoever showed up on his route, knowing one of Law/Kidd/Luffy had to show up if they did split up, all so he can try steal the Road Poneglyph. Law was forced into fighting after being ambushed. Kidd after originally planning a 3 supernova captain (+ Killer) Alliance with Hawkins & Apoo to take down Shanks, after losing to his crew & failing to even see Shanks pre-time skip after losing arm to Beckman (I think). Kidd then got betrayed in his alliance & tried to fight Kaido alone & got destroyed, imprisoned & tortured. He then allied with Luffy, teamed up with Law and went life & death to bring down Big Mom. He then gets 3 billion bounty, got stronger. Now without any alliance, on his own tries to take on Shanks, his crew & his entire fleet head on. Did he not have a 3-man alliance to try take him down originally because he knew he was too strong. Did he not see the difficulty of beating Big Mom when he went life & death despite fighting her 2 v 1 with Law. Did he think Shanks & his entire crew and his fleets was weaker then Big Mom on her own. Worst of all is that he was actually unaware of Shanks fleet actually being full of weak pirates, thinking they were paradise level pirates. Based on this fight he's gotta be the dumbest character in the entire series or possibly the most arrogant.

@@Sekooma In the volume written by Oda that was given to the first 3 million people who saw Film Red in theaters in Japan called One Piece: Volume 4,000,000,000, it lists what each crew member of Shanks’ crew ability’s are. For Shanks, it says how he is known as “The Killer of Observation Haki” due to him being able to prevent opponents from seeing into the future or just from knowing what he’s doing. This ability is called “Sign of Presence” and it makes it so that his presence misdirects his opponents into thinking he’s doing one thing when he actually ISN’T. So someone could probably use Observation Haki to try and read Shanks and it just wouldn’t work. You would think an attack is coming from the left when in reality its coming from the right, you might think you’re attacking him in one spot but in reality he’s in a different spot all together. This is why he is known as the “Killer of Observation Haki”

Let’s be real here, if Shanks is the Roger currently then Mihawk is the current Whitebeard. To argue otherwise at this point is just bias. Also in regards to Kidd. This is what I don’t get, people are so quick to yell out “Haki over everything”, yet those same people will put Kidd and Law over Zoro who has consistently shown better haki feats than those two combined. After all he’s the only one that has advanced conquers. I really don’t get how people can still put Kidd and Law over Zoro still.

I have been wondering for a long time about the eternal problem of who is stronger: Mihawk or Shanks? Few thoughts: Gandalf fought with a sword, but he was a wizard. Aragorn fought with the sword and was a swordsman. Maybe it's the same with Shanks and Mihawk. "Greater sword skills than Shanks" - why not just "stronger than Shanks"? Separating haki from skills is silly, but maybe swordsmen use haki in a specific way that results in a black blade. The problem is, haki is just a power that is used through some medium. For example, Gear 4th is closely related to haki, but Gear 4th is unquestionably a DF power. If someone uses a powerful haki through a sword (for example, "Divine Departure"), it is a swordsman skill. There is no such thing as "just haki" in combat. On the other hand, Shanks was capable of damaging a physical object (ship) with his mere presence and paralyzed Green Bull, so maybe there is such a thing as "pure haki". When Shanks shows up everyone talks about his haki and when Mihawk shows up everyone talks about "black blade"

Gandalf is a good example because Gandalf only used magic for random shit like fireworks or lighting a fire. When he fought, he simply used the Glamdring sword. Sometimes he would shine a light in the eyes of the Nazgûl and that was all. When he was fighting 9 Nazgûl at once, he was using some sort of fire and lightning magic (this wasn't in the movie). Another example is the battle with the Balrog where Gandalf used a combination of sword and magic. He used magic when no one was looking. When he was in battle, he fought like a warrior, but everyone called him a wizard. What Shanks did to Greenbull is the equivalent of the light Gandalf used to drive the Nazgûl away from Minas Tirith.

Only issue with this is, not all Haki needs a medium necessarily and not all Haki is about attack potency or damage With Armament you need a medium, but it’s far more defense oriented. It’s quite literally just the process manifesting Haki in a way that makes things *hard* Observation, you need no medium Conquerors also doesn’t necessarily need a medium, though it needs outside things to react on When it comes to Shanks vs Mihawk it’s not so much a separation of Haki from skill, it’s more the difference in priority for the person. That being said, it’s also very possible that not calling Shanks a swordsman is inaccurate, as he fought with a knife as a kid and was Mihawks rival at one point. It’s entirely possible for the title of “Words Greatest Swordsman” to be Mihawks strictly due to the fact that he beat Shanks in 22 duels with Shanks only beating him in 21 Edit: It’s also useful to note, the only known character to have a black blade other than Mihawk is Ryuma…so imagine hearing a legend about this old samurai who killed a dragon with a pitch black blade, then imagine how you’d react if someone walked up to you with that exact type of blade
