I really respect that you acknowledge looting as a form of protest, even though this particular instance brought danger into your sister’s life (for those Americans who disagree, I’m pretty sure you were taught about the Boston Tea Party as a reaction to the Tea Act while in school, which was intentional destruction/theft of property). I definitely think there is a difference between breaking the storefronts of locally-owned businesses and defacing/wrecking banks with a history of discriminatory practices, but i’m also working to acknowledge that it is not my place (as a white person) to judge how people deal with their righteous anger at this point. On the actual main topic of this video, so many of these pieces look so great on you. My favorite piece was probably the velvet skirt (sucks that it didn’t fit), which initially drew my eye when you were featuring the one shouldered shirt, and continued to look gorgeous when you described it later in the video.
@michellerivera17104 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary! I’m Danielle’s Seester :) thanks for recognizing that destruction of private property can be a means of protest and redistribution of wealth. ✊🏽I’m not a big fan of using of using the Boston Tea Party as an example and or paralleling it to the looting we saw emerge as an offshoot of these protests. the main reason being those white folks intentionally dressed as native Americans while committing those acts. That is blatant disregard for Native Americans and setting the blame on them while escaping any accountability. To me that is an act of cowardice and is not holding truth to power when hiding under another persons skin. But I commend all you rise against power and redistribute wealth from affluent businesses and avoid harming black and poc businesses!
@sempervirens24 жыл бұрын
Michelle Rivera Firstly, I’m glad that you’re doing well and that incident hasn’t dimmed your commitment to anti-racism. I also 100% agree that it isn’t a direct corollary, and that the use of their idea of indigenous peoples’ garb was both disrespectful and cowardly. I was specifically aiming that comment at people who are all for (white) people deserving the rights the US’s “founders” fought with/for, but find destruction of property beyond the pale. I definitely do not see white colonists-who as a society repeatedly stole life, land, and ideas from other peoples- as the same as oppressed people expressing rage at their exclusion from systems of prosperity. With that in mind, I will use your words as motivation to find an example to use for such instances that doesn’t involve the use of a different culture as a costume.

How is stealing a form of protest? Lol
@loverboy61494 жыл бұрын
@@moonriver7439 my thoughts exactly... it will only make them look even worse than what they are portrayed as... i know that this society is super corrupt and its hard to protest peacefully... but theres gotta be a better way... than breaking into stores and stealing stuff..for what? What did the stores do? Id get it if it was the police stations... but then again who wants to destroy a police station with people who have tones of guns and weapons... but yeah sorry for my tangent..

That’s a very complicated situation with protestors and your sister that you shared. I’ve experienced that in my own neighborhood and I wasn’t sure how to handle it since the police are no help. Like how do we do something about it? Gather other neighbors? On another note, so much cool denim! There is no link to the estate sale. Where is it?
@twinelle4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! It makes sense why she didn't want to get police involved but also do you know how long it would've taken police to even get to the scene??? I live in ktown and when my bf and I got mugged the police took freakin forever to get to us and mocked the entire situation while I was shaking + on the verge of tears. It just sucks that lower income communities are not prioritized when crime happens. And I just included the OfferUp link in the description! I had to factory restart my phone and lost credentials for OfferUp and couldn't find her sale listing BUT I finally found it!!! 🤩

I’ve been looking for an orange 70s polo just like that for the longest. I was just starting to think they didn’t exist and I was just making them up because I’ve never found them anywhere in the world. However, now that I saw that you have one, I’m going to keep a lookout for one since I know they’re real lol Edit: also for flipping vintage clothing but wanting to keep their original form, I think you should do some reversible changes. Like for hemming something up, leave a thick hem underneath so the next person can undo if need be. Or taking in bottoms, out darts in the waist in order for the next owner to be able to seam rip them so they will fit. That’s what I do for really vintage stuff because I just feel guilty about possibly ruining the piece. Hope this helps!
@twinelle4 жыл бұрын

I’m not sure if you’ve covered this in a previous video, but can you share how you find estate sales? Obviously I can’t go to one rn but when I look them up I can only find company ones selling mainly furniture and offerup only has results from people selling items they previously bought at estate sales. I’ve gone to one once in the past, but it was by chance cause I thought it was a garage sale. I’d love to go to another some time later especially since it looks like we’re gonna miss yard sale season cause people can’t stop getting sick 🤭

@twinelle4 жыл бұрын
Hey! I actually did not say it’s okay I said “I understand” why ppl are looting. It’s a form of protest against our capitalistic country. But some ppl who loot without the intent to send a message to the country and being careless and hurting low income communities or threatening innocent civilians is NOT OKAY. Hope this clarifies everything. Thanks!✨

@audrianna96824 жыл бұрын
You just lost a subscriber. Looting shouldn't be going on regardless of neighborhood. Also, telling people to know who their "target" is...shut up girl, I live on Michigan Avenue in Chicago and none of these people who tore it apart live here....but I do. So you're saying that it's okay to tear apart other people's just community, just as long as it's not minority owned? You sound ignorant. How about not encouraging looting ANYWHERE because there's absolutely no excuse to whatsoever.
@twinelle4 жыл бұрын
Hey girl sad to see you leave. I am NOT encouraging looting and I NEVER said that it was acceptable in any community. Looting is gonna happen during this movement regardless and I dont agree with it but I said "I understand" why its happening. Yes, there's some cases where ppl are stealing just to steal, but others are trying to send a message to our capitalistic country. The incident I'm describing is different than what is happening in yours. I understand where you're coming from because K-town is also getting destroyed by rioters who make their way from downtown. And it sucks seeing literally every business boarded up and streets looking like a dystopia. Sorry to hear what's happening in Michigan Avenue in Chicago, but I was speaking about my sister's incident where she was threatened at gun point. Smaller mom n' pop shops are going to suffer more than billion dollar corporations with the rioting and looting BUT I never said any of it was ACCEPTABLE. Minorities also don't have the insurance or protection from the police/ security equipment like you would find in other wealthier neighborhoods. And this is coming from someone who grew up in a low-income community. And our neighborhoods don't get repaired from the damage or at least not as quickly as others. Please don't put words in other peoples mouths and don't be so rude trying to get your message across. Thanks!

Karen no one gives a fuck about your sob story about how your favorite avocado toast restaurant got a window broken, who the fuck would want you as a subscriber anyways😂
@michellerivera17104 жыл бұрын
You wanna be so rude then you shut up girl. Understand how folks are tired of systemically being oppressed and being forced into cycles of poverty. People use looting as a means to redistribute wealth. Don’t stand in the side of the oppressor. Uplift your community by educating yourself of how this racist, oppressive government is murdering people at alarming rates and refusing to be accountable and silencing us by widening the income gap. Especially coming from Chicago, where there is rich history in grassroots activism, I suggest you look to your community for education.
@audrianna96824 жыл бұрын
@@alf-c9r Karen is a term used for a white women, I'm not white and in fact a minority. My parents are immigrants. I don't eat avocado toast. Thanks for assuming that just because I'm against looting, I'm a white woman. Wealth doesn't need redistributed, you want to not live in poverty....work, get a job, do something about it instead of saying you were "forced" into poverty.
