Wow, that first wave. All the stars aligned, and it was a thing of beauty, surfer interacting with the perfect huge skatepark where carves are on the menu. I bet that felt insane.

My mom (R.I.P.) was from Oklahoma. I was born in Santa Cruz, so I surfed. Ended up at Mav's in the 90s (not to detract from the amazing things they pull off now, but with no skis and no flotation. Without help). She always said I would've been a bullrider if they stayed in Oklahoma. Respect to all who push it. And motocross is crazy. I pulled off jumping a Volkswagen and that was enough for me. Taco'ed the forks trying to jump 2. You know how your brain disconnects when you're in a situation you don't know if you're gonna make it? I was rolling around underwater being hit by these giant balls of force on my first big wipeout at Mavericks. Just spin cycle, being rag-dolled. My brain was having this calm conversation with myself: "Oh my God! I can't believe a wave can hit me this hard! What does this remind me of? A wave drill in football? No. Oh, I know! It's just like being blindsided on my motorcycle by a car running a stop sign at 30mph!!" If you've been blindsided by a car driving good traffic speed on your bike, that's what it's like being hit by those waves, but not pointy metal ripping into you. But imagine it keeps happening for 10, 15 seconds or more. You're a motorcycle guy. You probably get what I'm saying. Sorry old guy rant. Can't surf anymore cause of injuries. Can barely walk with my cane anymore.
@XxmattitudexXАй бұрын
its hard to compare it to anything else one thing for sure all three must be able to face fears and be tough.surfing can test body limits one guy might be fine another get a ruptured ear drum or dislocated limb from same situation.the tow surfers shortcut much of the work and toughening up that paddle surfers would have to endure to get to the level of riding massive waves. the lifeguards used to tell us they did not like us jumping off the pier to get out on big days because if we were not ready and tried to get out from beach we would not make it out past the surf line and the danger would be self limiting.surfing can mess you up when your paddling out and ducking waves impact from lip if you cannot get deep enough can be violent. you can be dragged back underwater feels like your in violent river rapids for a long time and go 1-200 yards.when riding the lip can hit you and chip shot you up into the air.if you get in the turbulence its very violent and can rip vests off your body while trying to drown you and this can happen until the sets end or you are dragged far enough inside the lineup . none of this involves getting impacted into anything which can also happen in shallow breaks
@seancallahan1312Ай бұрын
@@XxmattitudexX Remember you can't duck-dive a real gun, also. I used to duck-dive an 8' 6" Steve Coletta board, I made up a method of first paddling fast, grab the rails, and kind of belly-bunnyhop to get extra punch under. But no way anyone is duck diving whitewash on a 9' 6" or a 10' 4" like I used to ride. Punch under, blast paddle over, if the whitewash is like 6 ft. or less and you're right in front of a cliff or rocks, but that's an enormous expenditure of energy, like life threatening situations only. (In front of the jump rock at giant Swift St. on the Dec. 2000 swell, for instance. Fight for your life.)
@nickortcoski6769Ай бұрын
That 20 second swell is something else. Thise surfers are really equipped to deal with it, not just thst but they're fucking riooing the shit out if it ehen it stands up! Respect.

I live just down the Coast a wee bit, in Pacific Grove. We’ve had massive waves for nearly 2 weeks now: a “King Tide.” About a mile South from us near Monterey Peninsula CC a “sneaker wave” from these conditions claimed another soul. A tourist unaware of this phenomenon was on the boulders near the breakwater, no doubt trying to get the ‘right photograph’ before a single rogue wave snuck up on him and pulled him into the bay amidst the chaos of the breakwater. Never to be seen again. These XL conditions on the Central Coast bring us much beauty with even more danger!
