Someone really needs to make a modern movie about Gettysburg, or better yet, a trilogy with one movie for each day of battle. That's the only way they could include everything.
@aleksandryoung22137 жыл бұрын
I think you hit the nail right on the head. But we need to be careful who directs it. Gettysburg was written and directed in a way so that it didn't make either side look like the good guys or the bad guys.
@TheStapleGunKid7 жыл бұрын
I think the real challenge would be finding a director who was willing to hire thousands of extras to play the troops instead of using CGI. CGI is such a simple way to create armies these days that almost all directors rely on it. But using a virtual army wouldn't have the same feel as a real one.
@aleksandryoung22137 жыл бұрын
+TheStapleGunKid Damn strait. One of the tricks the director of Gettysburg did was film during actual Civil War Reenactments. Using footage of the reenactments themselves is a great tool because it's not copy right and easy to record.
@TheStapleGunKid7 жыл бұрын
Yeah also in the original movie, the re-enactors agreed to be in the film for free. I don't think a director could find that kind of a deal today. Perhaps some would agree to that, but I'm not sure enough would to form an army.

Indeed the British has a good victory/defeat ratio in war, but when it comes down to the actual battles of the wars, then the ratio is a bit more balanced. Anyway, what i wrote was meant as a joke (if you refer to the comment I think you are).

Movies in general are rarely historically accurate due to dramatic license usually being taken. Braveheart is completely inaccurate for example. Yet here in this movie they have their facts correct showing there is a picture of the Colonel in question. MHQ is a major historical magazine and the fact they got their fact wrong and movie got it right is rather significant to me. As to accuracy, I do know Gen. Custer fought off JEB Stuart who tried a rear attack, but this is not show in the movie.

If you look back to two enactments by Congress, you will find that slavery had been a core issue, if not THE core issue. Furthermore, if the South had truly meant to fight for State's Rights, why is it that they threw a fit when California voted to be One, Free State and tried hard to break up California into two pieces? It was all about Slavery.

One of my favorite parts of this scene in the film is when the camera pans out to Robert E. Lee’s (Martin Sheen’s) face when the remaining elements of Armistead’s depleted brigade reaches/captures the stone wall at Cemetery Ridge and there’s a glimmer of hope that the attack has broken through and succeeded in breaking the Union forces. The moment where on Lee’s face where you see complete confidence that his boys have won the day and may have finally secured southern independence for good. Even more so, the better part for me is when you see Garnett bravely riding forward and encouraging his men to confidently and calmly scale the fence at the Emmittsburg Road in order to save their strength for the final push to the Union line at the stone wall. While it was completely foolhardy riding a horse in the frontal portion of the overall attack and making yourself a perfectly shining target in a field of near-unabated musketry, shot, shell and finally canister fire (regardless of suffering a lame ankle after being kicked by your horse days before) it took major cojones to do so. If I saw my commander riding high and not worried of the whizzing minie balls and other close range ordinance being fired towards him at thousands of feet per second, what excuse would I have as a line infantryman in a group of thousands? Many people don’t understand that Garnett had something to prove and was on a quest to redeem himself and his honor/prestige as a brigade commander after being threatened with court-martial after Stonewall Jackson had accused him of insubordination during one the previous campaigns in the Shenandoah Valley. Allegations he grossly rejected and opposed. He was on a quest to prove himself just as brave and capable as Jackson. No irony that he commanded the very “Stonewall” Brigade Jackson had initially commanded before being promoted to command of his own corps. I can’t imagine a more heroic death than the bravery and courage he displayed on July 3rd, 1863 during Pickett’s Charge (as ill-fated and improbable of success as the entire attack was). Garnett’s body was never found. I’d argue the reason is he was blasted by close-range canister fire once he neared close enough to the Union lines and literally evaporated into thin air. Several eyewitness accounts from multiple Union soldiers at the “Bloody Angle” testified in their personal memoirs following the war that there were several instances of them seeing several layers of “reddish/pink mist clouds” enveloping the air high above the attacking lines of confederate infantry advancing towards them. Nothing but sheer bravery for a cause that runs impeccably deep in a man’s veins could otherwise implore him to commit to such a sacrificial endeavor. Gettysburg is the greatest Civil War film of all time. And for all the advancements made since 1993, I sincerely doubt another film about the Civil War will ever come remotely close to touching this incredible masterpiece. 🔥🤟🏼🇺🇸

I have the entire 4:30 hours long Movie. And have watched it, atleast 10 times. Armistead; and Chamberlain, will both always be, my favorites. In the entire Movie. @Tonic Tosser2001 close to 15-20,000 were already wounded, another few thousand dead, and the remainder alive and "well" men were worn out and depleted by the time this charge took place. They've been pushing union positions for days up hill. Picketts men were the last fresh troops that hadn't seen action yet at the battle. Im sure if lee really "sent it" with every last standing man, he prolly could have broken the union lines in a few spots. But at what cost? By the time it would be over, he'd have at most 10k men standing and not hurt.

An extremely underrated soundtrack. So many different scores in this movie are amazing but this one in particular is so emotional and powerful. I get chills everytime I hear it. Another one I get chills is the charge at Little Round Top.

I remember going to Gettysburg last summer with my dad, and going to the location of Picketts charge. I was dressed up in a partial Union army uniform that was fake for tourists. I swear I had my first paranormal experience being there dressed up as a Union soldier. What I heard was a guy shouting "You got 'em", when I fake fired my toy musket after getting up from my position at the stone wall.

There is nothing like hearing the drums as everyone comes out of the woods to form up the battalion fixing bayonets going to the shoulder arms and then the right shoulder shift I get chills from in the anticipation of getting ready to March across the battlefield everyone with mixed emotions excitement and anger and the look on everyone's faces so sincere ready to fight trust me I know I used to be a Civil War Reenactor but I wasn't in this movie Gettysburg I was in God's and Generals being there with Stephen Lange

This is Ted Turner's finest accomplishment. As I write this in Charlotte, North Carolina, I am in view of the old Television Tower of Channel 36 NBC in Charlotte, North Carolian which was the VERY FIRST TV Station Ted Turner owned! It still stands almost 60 years later.

I swear, the theme that begins at 2:37 sends a chill up my spine, and I feel goosebumps every time! The music just captures the courage and heroism of the soldiers doing battle in this moment! What an amazing movie!

Especially given how Lee's army was under-supplied and his soldiers almost worn through!

I attribute it to the loss of Jackson mere weeks/months prior. The issues were in interpreting Lee`s looser orders and act in a collected manner, perhaps even scale him down a bit. Something Jackson was quite good at. It is widely believed that he might have been able to convince Lee to use the successful (enough) first day as a feint to have the Union dig in, and pass them the following night.

Even so, the Union had huge reserve forces with bright and apt commanders at and around Washington. Thus there is no guarantee the white house would have burned had Lee managed to destroy the Potomac army at Gettysburg. The assault, even if successful and with minimum losses, still would have produced a huge butcher`s bill for Lee. Many argue he`d still have been forced to fall back, so the victory would have been hollow.

This scene and the music with it encompasses the so much about what made our nation what it is today. It had so much power. I still cry watching this scene. Because every person on that field was an American. They didn’t all agree, but they were all my brothers. And they all deserve to be honored.
