Hi Jim! Thanks for your previous support. Until May 14th the Lightroom title is on pre-sale at this link: howtogurus.com/lr2024. Like all of my titles moving forward this title is online only. We stopped selling DVDs at the end of last year, weren't making enough sales of the DVDs to justify the production costs. I like the DVD format but most computers sold today no longer have DVD drives.

George, I always wanted to learn lightroom! You can count me in!!!! I have done the whole process in reverse, having learned first post processing and manipulation all the way to actually shooting photographs that at times I wish I knew more about editing people and such. This is probably the missing piece for me and the area that I am weakest in. I know this will probably mean getting into a creative cloud membership but that is ok because the whole thing is a passion and it gets me outside and enjoying life. My first question, what version of lightroom should I be using? I hear many folks talk about different versions. I am thinking they are referring back to the time when you could buy the program outright. As I understand it now, the version doesn't really matter because creative cloud will always be updated as long as you are a member. Is this correct?? Yep, we are at the breaks, gas and keys level with this program and myself. Having a good grip on the nomenclature involve, I would think this should be a shorter learning curve for me. Ok, I lied, second question? Does Lightroom use any AI tools at this point? Thank you for all you do Guru Master George! Padawan Rich

Thanks Rich! There are 3 versions of Lightroom and you get them all with a subscription, but you don't have to install them all. The main program is Lighroom Classic, this has all the bells and whistles and is the desktop version. The one just named Lightroom is a scaled down version that is basically just the Develop module and is primarily for mobile use, usually on a tablet. Since I do all of my image processing back home in my studio I just use Lightroom Classic. If I was working as a professional photographer (news, wedding, etc.) I would probably take Lightroom along. There is also a vastly scaled down version called either Lightroom Mobile or Lightroom for the Web (I have seen Adobe use both names) which is designed for smart phones. Lightroom doesn't have much AI, basically just the usual Select Subjet, Select Background, Select Sky choices. This is mainly due to AI really isn't needed for this type of tool where you are improving an existing good photo. AI is great in programs like Adobe Photoshop where you are doing major modifications to a photo. I am putting up a video today for beginners on using Camera RAW in PSE where I explain the difference in intent between Camera RAW editors and image manipulation programs like PS and PSE (I am editing that video right now). One huge benefit of Lightroom for photographers is that it works natively in Camera RAW, instead of through a separate editor like in PS and PSE. So you can consider lightroom as being a Camera RAW editor on steroids.

@@HTGPhoto you anticipated my question on camera RAW. The problem I am running into with some of my other editors is they want to send stuff out as a tiff file if it is not a plug in. This is ok but you really would rather start with a RAW photo and I think working both Adobe products will keep the color the same. Did you saw your use Adobe RPG? Thanks Rich

Hi George, I really don’t know anything about Lightroom, I have PSE24 which I’m really enjoying learning thanks to your training course and videos. Is there an advantage to having Lightroom also, or can the same things be done in PSE? I also assume it’s a subscription service like Photoshop?

Hi Anne, Lightroom is part of a subscription for Photoshop, so if you get Photoshop you also get Lightroom. When working with RAW images Photoshop Elements and Adobe Photoshop both use a stand alone Camera RAW editor that works on top of the main program. Lightroom is the professional level version of that Camere RAW editor. For most casual users the Camera RAW editor in PSE is all you need, but if you are serious about photography or if its your job, then you may want to consider Lightroom. To be perfectly honest I have used Lightroom pretty much since it was first released, but I usually just use the built in Camera RAW editor in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements depending on which program I am using at the moment.

I am basically just taking up photography again as a hobby when I retire later this year, it kind of went by the wayside in the last few years, life keeps getting in the way, an experience I’m sure most people can relate to 😅 - love learning my PSE with your courses, so shall concentrate on improving that in meantime, thanks again 😊
