What makes this deception so on point is that the dead man has the look of a tough chiseled-jaw military man, and the captain posing as the doctor has the look of a doctor or medic. Aubrey definitely went up against a man who could match him for improvisational thinking.

Jack gets intrigued by the sheet of music lying on the floor, as the musician he is himself. The cook that attacks him with a dirk in the same scene is the French equivalent to Killick.

In fairness, most of these young midshipmen came from wealthy and elite British families. They got the best possible education you could have at the time, when most poor children their age barely got a primary education (if they got one at all). In return, things were expected of them. Carrying the family name on, maintaining or even enhancing its image in the country... There was certainly pressure to succeed and although competition wasn't too fierce, a certain level of endurance through often very tough times was necessary if you ever wanted to go from Midshipman to Lieutenant or higher. So yes, although these boys from upper-class families probably had a more comfortable upbringing than most others on that ship, they certainly were a great example of "to whom much is given, much is expected". In a sense, we should be glad that we no longer live in a day and age where every able person is recruited into the military ranks at age 11 because of all-out war. Sure, it's easy to compare those young Midshipmen of the early 1800s to nowaday's teenagers and laugh at them, but I think we can agree that not having to rely on 13-year old seamen or privates and having them worry about their school grades and careers afterwards instead, is a VERY good thing.

The surgeon, John McMullen, took part in the boarding. When a grape shot hit Hamilton on the leg but only after it's force had been spent, McMullen remarked, "By Jasus, Captain, if that gun had had a few more grains of powder, I should just have had to cut the leg off!"* *from "The Frigate Surprise" by Brian Lavery and Geoff Hunt.

I don't think the captains actions are possible or logical in this scene. He was shown to be topside when the Surprise pulled it's trick. So in the confusion, he'd have to have ran below decks instead of fighting with his men. What a coward. But his plan makes no sense. He hides amongst the prisoners on the Acheron as it heads to Valparaiso and then what? Overpowers Pullings and the prize crew? And then what? His ship is too badly damaged to sail back to France, I doubt they have enough money to affect repairs and where are they going to recruit enough crew to get home? I just don't get what his plan was. But then, I don't get Aubrey's plan. I get he's just neutralised the Acheron, but why split up and risk your prize crew being overtaken? They sailed with 197 men. They lost 9 men in the first attack. They lost Worley and Hollum throughout the film. They must have lost at least 40-50 men in this attack. Why does he not think to take the Acheron and Surprise to Valparaiso together and sort themselves out there? I like how later in the film, he says "refit as necessary". Like, how? How would it be possible for Pullings to equip the Acheron with a new main mast and repair all the other damage done with just a skeleton crew that have no experience handling a ship of that size? How on earth would they get home around Cape Horn? The way they wrap this movie up just doesn't make sense.
