Great stuff, Jared! I own the D850, and am wondering your thoughts on using the “Group AF” setting instead of D25 or D9? Are there any situations where you use that option? Love your work! Jeff

Awesome. I’ve never liked using the group setting for anything other than birds for exactly the reasons you describe. I’ve gotten more “keepers” of birds with group than d9 or d25, but I’m quite certain this is because my technique is inexperienced and lacking. Arthur Morris has talked a lot about using group af. His work is obviously stunning. He isn’t afraid to change all kinds of settings throughout his shoots to find the right combinations. He’s pretty obsessive! :-) I’ll go back to working in d25 & d9 on birds. I think I just need more practice, and nobody can argue with your results! im getting bad results with osprey in flight (head/eye not sharp) with group focus. You think 25 point will be better? Nikon d500. 200-500 lens.

I believe so, yes. You still need to get that center point in the bird though! Make sure your shooting with your cross type sensors selected as well - this way you can lock o to either vertical or horizontal lines of contrast. And speaking of contrast, if you are shooting in a situation where the contrast of the environment is keeping you from locking into your bird, try using Group (GRP). I find this cuts though the contrast issue better than other AF settings
