Mastering birds in flight can be on the biggest technical challenges you face in the world of wildlife photography. But nailing your autofocus settings is the the first step in conquering this style of photography. In this video, I'm waist deep in the Choptank Rank on the Eastern Shore of Maryland to explain the most important thing you need to know about mastering birds in flight photography.

It's not just your talent as a photographer, it's the respect you give to your subjects and the environment that you are photographing in. Well done Jared.

It’s a really unique situation with these birds. If you ever plan on coming over to the States in the winter, let me know and I will give you the details of where this is

Great Video and I just bought a one year subscription to the Journal of Wildlife Photography. I just wish that I could get the ducks to swim as close to me as you have in this video. To learn how to get them to do this would be priceless as far as my duck photography were concerned, LOL! Please keep the videos and articles coming! Thanks again!

@@JaredLloydPhotos that is very generous of you. Nothing comes to mind. This will be my first time trying the approach/setup you used for this video to photograph waterfowl.

Great stuff, Jared! I own the D850, and am wondering your thoughts on using the “Group AF” setting instead of D25 or D9? Are there any situations where you use that option? Love your work! Jeff

Awesome. I’ve never liked using the group setting for anything other than birds for exactly the reasons you describe. I’ve gotten more “keepers” of birds with group than d9 or d25, but I’m quite certain this is because my technique is inexperienced and lacking. Arthur Morris has talked a lot about using group af. His work is obviously stunning. He isn’t afraid to change all kinds of settings throughout his shoots to find the right combinations. He’s pretty obsessive! :-) I’ll go back to working in d25 & d9 on birds. I think I just need more practice, and nobody can argue with your results! Thanks for the reply, Jared and for sharing your fantastic work!

im getting bad results with osprey in flight (head/eye not sharp) with group focus. You think 25 point will be better? Nikon d500. 200-500 lens.

I believe so, yes. You still need to get that center point in the bird though! Make sure your shooting with your cross type sensors selected as well - this way you can lock o to either vertical or horizontal lines of contrast. And speaking of contrast, if you are shooting in a situation where the contrast of the environment is keeping you from locking into your bird, try using Group (GRP). I find this cuts though the contrast issue better than other AF settings
