Mike Rowe talks with Steven Pressfield, the two-time New York Times Bestselling author of The War of Art, Gates of Fire, and The Legend of Bagger Vance, discusses how to listen to your muse while ignoring your Resistance, why he carries a Smith Corona typewriter but doesn’t actually use it, and what he learned from driving a truck, picking fruit, and writing advertising copy. His newest book is a memoir titled Govt Cheese.

Hey Mike! You just took a picture with my mom in NY. Just wanted to say thank you for being so nice to my mom and letting her explain how I’ve been a huge fan and how I got to see your speech at the 2010 Boy Scout jamboree. Hopefully one day our paths will cross and I’ll get to shake your hand!

I ate a lot of government cheese (high quality cheddar), powder cheese, powder eggs (made GREAT scrambled eggs and added nutrients to boxed dinners and baking mixes) and other government items, but not because I was on the government poor list, but because of friends and relatives who were and traded the foods (that they always dissed) for other items or simply gave them away because they had too much and didn't like them. I wish I could buy the powdered food -- long term storage and very good for casseroles and baking. Those foods helped get me through college. I appreciated them far more than their intended recipients.

Can't help myself, the government cheese thing got me. It goes back to prohibition. Ice cream replaced alcohol as the social consumable, demand for milk went through the roof, and the dairy industry was born. After prohibition there was a huge surplus of milk, which the government decided to buy rather than letting the industry collapse. Farmers began to produce more milk since they were being paid by the government, which had more milk than they needed. Since they couldn't store milk long term they turned it all into cheese, and now we have 1.5 BILLION pounds of the stuff in cold storage across the country.

51:30 Has a big point. A decent metaphor lies in the local auto racing guy. He goes out every Saturday and runs eleventyfifth. His buddy looks on and asks "Do you ever win?" "No, I'm happy to get a top ten." When he finally gets to winning, his buddy asks "Did you win the season championship?" "No, but we keep at it." When he wins the Championship, his buddy asks "Are you in the top division?" "No, but we're stepping up next season." You can see how this might one day lead to his buddy asking "You've been doing this for years and still haven't won the Daytona 500. Why did you waste all this time and effort?" I operate a local wood shop and make simple things, fix the neighbor's chair, refinish a table or two along the way. Hand cut dovetails, classic design, fancy video-worthy heirlooms are not what I do. But I win every day.

While i was reading your comment and especially the last part, i though "...But you are winning every day" ...before i read the last sentence. it is this satanic world that fools us that only if you receive a big monetary reward , or a Award in your field, or TV recognition, only then you have "succeeded" . So many people Suck-seed. Suck-cess-pool people. And many of them have sold their soul ,when we WANT we are tempted to go to the crossroad, where that devil/satan stands.

Hey Mike! Thanks for this conversation. In my 73 years, I have found that when I'm struggling with the inner me, or have come to the idea of just get on with it to see what happens, some book or blog or person comes along to set off a light bulb or give confirmation of decision. How ever that happens, personally is God, my daughter calls the universe.

We always ended up with a thick rich nondescript white cheese that was the best cheese we ever ate! It wasn't "American cheese" it was real cheese. The only cheese my Mom bought was Velveeta but the government cheese was good to eat and yes, great for grilled cheese sandwiches and great memories!😉❤

My Mom's "adopted" Mom got cheese when I was a kid. She lived in subsidized senior housing and most of the people there got cheese. There was more cheese than they could ever eat. They would share the cheese between them so it wouldn't go to waste. We were the beneficiary of cheese a number of times. It was basically the poor man's Velveeta. No-frills packaging. Lasted forever!

Chuck - the term you are looking for in the case of two movies/books/ideas/inventions happening at the same time without each other's knowledge is called Simultaneous Invention. This happens more than what is given credit. Steven mentioned the ether - there is a 'commonism' that says if you want to develop something do not say it out loud - as if you do it goes into the ether and someone else may be receptive enough to receive the idea and go forth with it.

My friend was a prolific writer. She wrote every day for many hours, whether she felt like it or not. She told me it was the most important part of being a writer. A fascinating thing was, her papers were tucked away in places all over her house, You could open a kitchen drawer for a fork and find sheets of paper with full stories on them. I mean everywhere, loose papers in bathroom cabinets or under the couch cushions. I think she liked finding them again and having people find them. It was great fun to find them while doing something mundane, next thing you know, you are immersed in some incredible tale, or something about history, or current events, and she would talk about them in depth. She lived near Roanoke Is. It will be a chapter in my memoir

I have written songs that come from nowhere in minutes. Normally that has been the process for the lyrics the musical part doesn’t always accompany the lyrics though. Sometimes it does and the whole song gets written and I have to write it down and play it on guitar over and over and over again so I don’t forget it or loose it. Recently I have been memorizing chord progressions and riffs that become full songs or parts of songs. Over the past three or four years I have compiled a notebook full of songs and parts of songs. I also have a noted book full of rants and raving on about our state of affairs within the political spectrum.

Mother was very inventive...doing things so we would eat/drink the food.
