For comparison, I just took the Rutgers Master Gardener program here in New Jersey. Our program met in the classroom from 9 am - 1 pm every Tueday and Thursday for 13 weeks, plus we had several field trips, too. We then had to submit a plant/insect/disease identification project and take the final exam. Each trainee also had to do a short presentation to the class, and every day someone brought in food! It was fantastic! To receive the certification we now need to complete 60 hours of volunteer work, 30 of which must be on the Helpline. We also had mentors, but not one for each person, they were mentors for the group, but the mentors are amazing-super helpful and fun, too! The classes were incredible. The presenters were extremely knowledgeable, many of them professors or scientists from Rutgers or from the State of NJ or Mercer County-all of them experts in their fields. The whole experience was wonderful and so fulfilling! It’s great that you are documenting your experience. Hopefully, it will help others who are considering the program to take the leap! Good luck!

It was so much fun and a bit déjà vu to hear about your first day of Master Gardener classes. I live in Washington state - zone 8b and have been a Master Gardener for 7 years. Once you’ve completed the classes, I know you’ll enjoy being a Master Gardener and passing along your horticultural knowledge. It’s a wonderful organization!

Good morning from your Master Gardener from Atlanta, Georgia. Exciting beginning class. Great plans on how to use your volunteer hours. Excellent books that you are purchasing. I did not have the pruning book as part of my collection of gardening books. So I just ordered it from EBay. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself purchasing more books as you continue the series and continue your education. Books from The American Horticultural Society are great to add to your collection. Again, as always, keep up the good work - stay focus - and I look forward to hearing about your Master Gardener 056 journey. Have a great day and week!

El Nino is pretty much drought(heat strokes are often, so, guys, be cautious during that period.), and La Nina is wet(so it's basically flood city when it comes by).

That’s for Australia, it’s the exact opposite on the other side of the Pacific. El Nino will bring storms all the way across the Gulf of Mexico to Florida causing floods.

So happy that you are truly enjoying the course you are taking. Just the way you are sharing all the info that you got shows me that you are like a sponge and just absorbed the information all in. Sounds like you will have an amazing time. Just one thing that I have read and heard in my local nurseries and that is that the first year of planting a drought tolerant plant is just settling in and establishing itself. The second year to the third year is when you will be able to see the plant in the hot sun doing it's thing properly. Just a thought. Enjoy and have a great rest of your day.

Yay! What a great idea to use your skills. Every interaction with a master gardener I have ever had has been so beneficial and interesting. A county parks program would offer classes taught by Master gardeners, and those where so good! I think the two I was able to go to were on vegetable gardening, and growing trees or bushes with edible fruits.

If you're going to go with drought-tolerant plants, please go with natives. California has a diverse native selection. We have native peony, elderberry, sunflower, clematis etc. I actually started incorporating natives in my garden due to the drought. Look up St Catherine's Lace Buckwheat, Julia Phelps Ceonothus, and Tree Anemone, all evergreen with gorgeous flowers!

Thanks for sharing the MG program experience. I’ve always been curious about it and even though my brother is an MG in HI, I still had no idea it was what you have been describing. I’m curious where you got the info that last year was the hottest year on record. Was that just for Davis? I’m in 9b not too far from you and I never saw that info on the local news or felt like it was hottest ever in my area.

What an excellent idea to share gardening knowledge through KZbin. You do a great job with your channel, and I am sure you will do a good job for the Master Gardeners program. Jim Putnam, whose HortTube with Jum Putnam channel does videos with various plant masters in the horticultural world that are fascinating. I have learned a lot watching his videos. You probably have similar ideas jn mind, just particular to your local program. Good luck!

I’m just a backyard gardener not a farmer or specialist in thing… are they wanting just average people who love to garden?
