Master Martial Arts Flawlessly and Faster - GM Jim Brassard Shaolin American Kempo Karate
Vince Lombardi said "Practice does not make perfect. PERFECT practice makes perfect."
It's not just repeating something that will make you a master....it's repeating it without error.
This is a very powerful combo for learning. Imitate the movements of the masters.
Repeat their movements over and over again, and repeat them slowly enough so that you do them exactly the same.
Or simply put........."NEVER PRACTICE A MISTAKE"
Any learning is a biological process of creating neural networks in the brain. Every perfect repetition beats a good path.........one that you can travel on later.
Every incorrect repetition beats a parallel but incorrect path........one that you can easily slide onto if you aren't careful.
The more you practice perfectly, the deeper the memory path. The trick is to make the correct paths as deep as possible and the incorrect paths shallow or even nonexistent.
The faster you perform a movement, the more likely it is that you will make a mistake.......unless you have only cut one path for it-----a perfect one.
You want to have no neurological way to screw it up.
A martial artist's greatest nemesis is rushing themselves. Learning new techniques rather than performing them well. They figure the faster they can learn more moves the faster the can get more rank.......the truth is quite different.
BOOOOY I have made this mistake in the past. I would learn a new move and want to master it quickly.
Instead of taking each part slowly and surely, I would rush myself. The result?????
I had a LOT of flaws in my art........."You will spend the second half of your training making up for the mistakes you made in the first."
Is what I have learned and teach. So for now........slow down!!!!
And what for my next email...
