I'm trying to run at the suggested parms of 9dKH/440ppm/1350ppm. I currently use TM Pro and have a hard time keeping the alk even above 7dKH let alone 9 using sodium carbonate to boost it. My Ca and Mg are in the desired range. I'm wondering if I'm better off switching to TM Classic and dosing up the Ca and Mg side of it? My tank is less than a year old with only some LPS and zoa frags so not a lot of alk and calcium demand. My sand bed gets hard and clumpy so I'm guessing that is where my alk is going. I like the mixing and storage characteristics of the TM salts so want to stick with those.

Do the corals pump out the magnesium to make the calcium carbonate crystalize in their tissues? I'm thinking cell biology magnesium is getting pumped against the gradient of some other element. I would love to know more details.

We have found in indoor horticulture that plants grown under leds require more magnesium than those under HIDs. How have leds affected magnesium and calcium in reefing?
@BRStv
@BRStv 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I can't say that we've seen increased magnesium or calcium consumption when using LEDs, although we've never really studied it beyond anecdote.

So is it recommended to use the TM pro salt and the boost the dKH? So confused.... I’ve been researching this stuff for years and when ever I think I’ve got a hang of it.... I don’t. Lol
@BRStv

You can easily adjust your alkalinity level by adding in some sodium bicarbonate to your freshly mixed saltwater. Another thing to consider is if you're doing a 10% water change with 7 dKH TM Pro Reef and you keep your tank at 9 dKH, that'll only lower your tank's dKH to 8.8 dKH. Probably not worth adjusting the fresh saltwater and just account for that 0.2 dKH drop in your weekly two part dosing.

@@BRStv thank you for the reply! Turns out my LFS supplies TM classic. Would you suggest boosting calcium to 440 and magnesium to 1350 with additives on initial fill? Then using all for reef to maintain appropriate levels? Understanding calc and mag levels will slowly fad with water changes and will have to be boosted once again in the future.

Hey Ryan hopefully you look at these comments and reply. My calcium on 1/23/21 was very high. At 522 and magnesium was at 1381 . I have been dosing brightwell code B only for now and it's cone down some im at 484 cal now and 1357 mag should I be doing more? Can you suggest anything that I could be doing in addition to code B . My alkalinity is at 7.6 and PH is at 7.9 . Nitrates are high at 30 in this 3 year old 65 gallon mixed reef with lots of live rock..maybe too much live rock . Lightning is the original first gen hydra 26 I have two of them 12 inches off the water. Running a sump skimmer by eshopps the axium series and two small reactors for carbon ( sea Chem renew) and phosguard by sea Chem . Temp at 78 degrees with salinity at .026

Since the calcium level isn't dangerously high, letting it fall on it's own over time is going to be your best bet. It sounds like you're doing everything right. Nitrates are higher than most reefers would like, but judging by your comment, you already know that and are working on it. We usually like to recommend alkalinity closer to 9.0 dKH, but 7.6 dKH isn't going to cause mortality.

Is brightwell code B going to get me to that 9.0 alkalinity goal? Should I change to something more aggressive? . Thanks for replying to my comment..

OK I have a question what if we get all Our carols from the farmed sources like maybe 90% of people in the hobby do. So my question is why even bother chasing those numbers why not just condition corals to the water standard we have already ? I get all my coral from the same supplier I know the water levels and I know mine and I match them as close as possible. 👍🏻 I get my salt from them also it’s the same as they use. And all my Coral are growing fast look healthy and bright.

There are multiple paths. Emulating, where they were farmed, is a legit one. In this case, I would also use the same brand of test kits as them as well as ask them to show you how they perform and read the endpoint to make sure it is actually the same.

Most of the plots in this video show a horizontal orange line with a numeric value. Maybe I just missed the explanation but can you please let us know what it represents? I’m guessing that it’s the Triton ICP result but don’t want to make assumptions. I’m forced into too making too many of those as it is haah.

Has anyone ever used their used water change water to clean a chicken coop? Theoretically, I think it would be a nice chemical-free abrasive + recycling. Plus, chickens are always needing vitamins. Anyone tried it?

I'm wondering if the salt would be good for clearing the weeds that are growing between the flagstones in my backyard. Knowing my luck, the nutrients that are in the water will just make the weeds grow faster, salt or no salt.
