I do 2 part succulent soil mix 2 part perlite and about 15% small granite Pebbles that I had in my patio. I was lucky enough to have enough of ingredients to make a huge batch And pot everything once in for all because the mixture I had at first wasn't draining sufficiently. once a month I give them a little bit of liquid cactus & succulent food. they have all been doing so well since I changed that soil mix. they are all finally getting good root systems instead of just shallow balls.

My gritty bonsai soil mix isn't really taking to my plants it's just a bunch of pebbles that fall everywhere so I mixed some cactus soil with it and I'm hoping it'll keep my plants alive because now some of the leaves are starting to fall off. The regular cactus soil work great for my jade gollum plant.. so I'm hoping by mixing the regular cactus soil with the bonsai soil I'll have success. I'm in NC so it's almost fall but it doesn't really get cold here until January

The regular cactus soil should also work on a lot of succulents if planted in a ceramic pot. I would just add some fertilizer to keep them fed. I find that having a grow light indoors also helps with succulent coloring. Please do let me know how the Cactus & Bonsai soil go. Thanks for watching.

@GrowingSucculentswithLizK
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK 3 жыл бұрын
The answer to your question(questions) is not in one video but are nearly in all of my videos. Mediterranean weather is almost the same as ours here in Canberra Australia. The suitable soil mix varies between plant(dormancy period varies between species), season, temperature, location(exact spot where the plants are kept), planter used(terracotta or ceramic pot) and humidity. I have a different soil mix for different scenarios. List of the different soil mix I use is below this video.

I did 4 tests with all golden barrel cacti and all the same size starting about year ago. The one with ONLY Bonsai Jack has grown the most. The one with Bonsai Jack, Espoma Organic Cactus Mix, and 100% perlite did the next best. 33/33/33 ratio. Next was Bonsai Jack and 100% perlite. Mix 70/30. The worst one was the one that was Espoma Organic Cactus Mix mixed at a ratio of 50/50 with perlite. One thing of note was the Second one, the Bonsai Jack, Espoma Organic Cactus Mix, and 100% perlite, 33/33/33 mix, it made the golden barrel cactus "pop" out above the media. It doesn't look like it has a good foundation, but it does and is growing well. Wiggling the small Barrel Cacti itself, the Second one has the least wiggling, followed by the first, then the third, and finally the fourth. All golden barrels were bought at the same time from the same place and at the same size. They have all been watered the same every time, in the same type of pot, and in the same growing conditions. I bought these four golden barrels last year for this reason or testing different media I will use. In my opinion Bonsai Jack is the best, followed by the the one with Bonsai Jack, and 100% perlite. The problem with Esopma Cacti mix is that it completely dries between watering. Therefore, it makes it almost impossible to get water to the roots and then let them aerate. Esopma is the equivalent of letting peat moss dry. It's so hard to get watered thoroughly without aggravating the media.The cacti are in a constant state of drought I would think, watering once a month.

Question! I may have already asked this in another video, but have you ever used Hydrogen Peroxide mixed with water to water your succulents every now and then? It's supposedly very good for roots, for all plants. Also, Sifting the soil is GENIUS! I HATE all the twigs and chunks in the soil! We have a ton of granite road base - so I will sift, like you have. I was trying to "pick" the small pieces. dumb! thank you again! I enjoy your videos!

There's a saying that goes "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." I will only try something new if I have a problem with my plants. So far they're all doing exceptionally well. You can maybe try using Hydrogen Peroxide yourself and please let me know how it goes. Happy New Year and may 2021 be a great year for you.

@GrowingSucculentswithLizK
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK 3 жыл бұрын
This Master soil mix is for succulents mainly grown outdoors. I use this soil mix only for certain types of succulent indoor plants like Peperomia. Different indoors plants will need different soil mix. For example, Orchids will need a different type soil to a Philodendron or a succulent peperomia.
@christopherteresi3480
@christopherteresi3480 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Liz can soil better be adjusted based on your area? I typically use sifted potting soil(by my own hands) and perlite because it's easy to find here in Florida at about a 50/50 mix. I have thought about alternative ingredients like coarse sand and peat. But I'm not sure what mix ratios. I live in Florida I can get 7 days of rain in a row. So I like that mix because it seems to dry out in the top half of the the large pots fast. Even though they're under a over hang there is still possible misting from rain. Also couple that with 90% humidity. Do you have suggestions. I am a year into this and I have nearly 500 plants possibly. I have lost some but as I have dived deeper in the hobby I have realized soil is the most important aspect to a healthy garden. I have repotted everything and made plants look better then when I have gotten them. Any ratios for quick draining soil would be more then noted for future projects of mine.
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK 4 жыл бұрын
And they said that succulents are easy to grow....LOL I love the simplicity of decomposed granite because it seems to have all the mineral requirements for growing “some” succulents suitable to my area. BUT...If I live in an area with high humidity...I would probably use a media that can absorb moisture without compromising the water requirements needed by the plants. I’ve been planning to do a video on this topic (Soil mixture for wet and dry season locations)hopefully sooner than later, so please keep watching for my future soil videos.

I don't do anything to the leaves until they grow roots. No roots, no water. When rooted, keep them moist (dry top between watering) until they grow to a certain size. Usually between 1 month to 3 months, depending on the succulent.

Hi Ms Liz. Can I use Osmocote 14-14-14 as an alternative for the seamungus or rite-gro? Or if you have better suggestions, would highly appreciate it. I’m living here in the PH and I’m having a hard time looking for the best fertilizers to use. Thank you! ♥️

May I suggest using organic fertilizer such as chicken or cow manure pellets. Blood and bone pellets is also good. Seaweed pellets also. Pellet form is best as it's slowly realeased into the soil. If you can get a fertilizer with lower nitrogen...much preferred by succulents for coloring up. Good luck.

Hi Liz, I found your channel recently and have been loving the content. I have a question about the potting mix portion of your recipe. In the US, most potting mixes are peat moss with some other things added. Is that also the case in Australia? I’m wondering because peat moss can be hydrophobic and I’ve watched other videos of yours where you take off most of the peat moss that new succulents are planted in at the nursery.
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK 3 жыл бұрын
According to their SDS report. It's a blend of raw and/or 100% None Allocated composted natural organic materials, with addition of mineral additives. Most of the potting mix we have in Australia are free of peat moss. They are mostly consist of leaves, lawn cuttings, mulched garden plants twigs and bark.

You can only try Renju. Once cow manure is well composted, it can be considered as compost since they mainly eat grass. I suggest doing a small mix and trying it on the cheapest and most common succulents you have first.
@renjusunish5160
@renjusunish5160 4 жыл бұрын
Okay. Thank you so much for your suggestion 😊👍👍. I already tried with few of them. I can see the tips of few leaves burnt; may be because of the heat of cow dung? Also few others seem to be having wrinkled leaves too, which is alarming. I'm not sure if they need more water?! Another issue I face here is high humidity and as a result fungus in the potting mix after almost 2 weeks of watering. The top layer gets dried up too quickly , but the middle layer and the bottom remain moist for weeks, which results in fungus!! I don't know how to deal with it🙄. Need to try small containers which might, i hope, will help to get rid of this issue? Do you have any suggestion for those who have humid weather? Also, any alternative for granite? We don't get decomposed or crushed granite here. Sorry. That's too many questions I know 😀. But these are all my concerns 😕

Hello from Sydney, Liz. I love you videos, thank you so much for sharing :-) ANL has something called DECO granite, they said it is decomposed granite but the grains looks a lot finer than your granite... is that the right granite to get? Also, how do you identify the succulents? A lot of the ones from bunnings doesn’t have a name 😔
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK
@GrowingSucculentswithLizK 4 жыл бұрын
Succulent identification can be done online. Type in succulent for sale and go to online stores that sells succulents. Decomposed granite will vary from different locations and all contains minerals that the succulents love. The one I use in my videos is not available commercially. Similar granite can be use but will be a lot finer than the one I'm using so you'll have to sieve first to remove the fine powder. I'm now using granite from Corkhill Bros. Landscaping Supplier in Mitchell, ACT. Link below and take a look at the yellow granite to see if it's similar to ANL. www.corkhillbros.com.au/landscaping-supplies-canberra/granites-canberra/

I meant to say the decomposed granite I used is crushed a lot more finer consistency than the one YOU Showed in video …do u think this is o.k.?? I did try to form a ball with wet soil and it doesn’t stay together- so I thought that was a good sign that it will be ok for water drainage. Help anybody….comments or suggestions. The purpose of my master succulent soil mix is to use it on succulents that can go without watering for long periods of time in winter. That's why I like to use coconut coir/peat in my mix for the reason that the soil will stay moist for a long time (no watering for 3 months in winter); but the coco peat will absorb most of the moisture to prevent root rot. DG provides the minerals needed to color up. Master soil mix provides moisture and drainage at the same time. The soil mix you have is quite different to my Master soil mix in this video. I would highly recommend to first try out your soil mix by soaking a 10cm pot and see how long it takes to dry up. Due to the perlite, I feel that this soil mix will dry up faster than my Master Soil mix. That means you'll have to water them more often and the more times you water them, the less colorful they'll be.
