Thank you for this video. I'm going to practice these techniques, but I have a question.... Does this counterbalancing maneuver this still work if your bike is over 700 pounds, but you only weigh 125 lbs? Am I going to have enough body weight to keep it from falling? I am very comfortable riding, but not comfortable making a tight turn (especially left) out of a crowded gas station or anywhere where there are other cars and people.

Man, I can't explain how much this video helped me. Actually let me explain: U-turns were my worst nightmare when riding. I always had the fear of losing balance and dropping the bike when attempting a U-turn. Then I came across your video. Then I pulled my balls together and took my bike to a nearby empty parking lot. Then I instantly decided to go slow and do the weight shifting to the other side when controlled speed with the rear break. And voila! It works! Now I just practice it daily and master this skill. As exaggerated as it may sound, this video actually made my U-turn fear monster go away.

This is an excellent video for a beginner! I took a 2 day MSF course a couple of weeks ago, passed the written, but didn't make it through the first day of the riding skills. I was on a Honda Rebel and I couldn't hold the clutch in as I'm short with extremely short hands. I've passed the DMV permit exam so am practicing just what you've been showing. I'm on a smaller bike with a loser clutch, easier to handle. Oh, and I'm older than the average student! Nearing 70, next year... but I'm determined to get my license, so I can ride in the back country roads, or side streets, not on freeways. Great video! Thanks!

@TopsailBound: I added some foam (the ones to hold the water temperature in the heating tubes - to avoid some fear of spoiling sth. on the bike*), but the most important exercise was to begin with a comfortable radius and practised that for a while. First I tried to become too close too early. I became confident, and THEN I drew the circle a bit closer, step by step. With 69yo it takes a little longer, so what? * I take them off, whem I.m back, and use them only during the practise I am not as far as in the vid to turn on a bistro table, but better than before. To countersteer with the body is a lifelong everyday exercise (for me). Before I start my trip, I go to some outer streets (not to disturb neighbours) and ex. some weight-on-off--forward-bw-slow-very slow- throttle-clutch-game and so on). It feels good!

Once gave a girl her 1st lesson in riding a bike. Little sister of a classmate of my bro. She had her car liscence for more than a year. But noone in her family rode a bike. (this is about how much appreciate riding slow skills) : I chose a gravel way with large potholes. Shortly after we had some heavy rain. Some 33ft down that way was a crossing with a huge puddle. And promised her to make a turn around that without putting her feet down in less than 1 hour. She nodded at me, saying: "You're crazy!" So I had her sit on my bike (BMW R 75/5 with the old Avon fairing, weighting 25kg, lasting on mostly the front wheel.) 1st lesson: motor off. I pushed the bike down that way. Her, concentrating on how to steer the bike through potholes on slippery surface. 2nd lesson: I showed her how to kickstart the bike, holding on to the handlebar. 3rd lesson: I told her how to shift into 1st gear only. Use the clutch to get going. And, very important: "If this thing gets outta control for you: (breaking on wet suface needs some skills) PULL THE CLUTCH! If it's getting you confused: pulling the clutch will stop acceleration. The motor might blow if you still twist that throttle. But you will not crash into a ditch with an accelerating bike." (She was always in control. Never needed to do this.) Safety first. Almost at walking speed. I ran down the way. Right next to her. Controlling the speed just with the throttle was her lesson. 4th Lesson: shifting into 2nd gear while riding. And shifting back down before the puddle. By that time, she was so used to the former basics that she easily managed that point, too: a close u-turn around a puddle on a dirt road, riding a dresser (or bagger): a street bike. In riding school, her bike then was a BMW R45 without a fairing: she reported to me: "That was sooo easy! I was able to do everything with that little bike!" This was back in the late 80's. You might see how much slow riding skills have always a huge point to me. Still today: coming on to red lights, if noone behind me to annoy, I try to go as slow as possible. It simply is training your feeling of balance with a bike. I think it's priceless. Thank YOU again for such a great tutorial!

Anand Zorba - well I won’t give up! But I don’t don’t understand why there is more emphasis on scooters in this country! Some of us are older and don’t want to deal with that kind of motorcycle clutch LOL. In the motorcycle courses they offer here, 99% of them don’t let you take your own bike which would be my scooter, Or they don’t even recommend scooters when you’re having a real hard time with the clutch! I almost gave up riding because of that reason! But a friend had a smaller scooter he let me use and I loved it! Now I have a 350cc Honda Firenze that I love- and no clutch- NO stress!

When my husband died I sold his Harley and I stopped riding- until last year when I made the decision that my friend can learn how to ride it 70 years old, why can I learn at 60 yrs old? Unfortunately the motorcycle clutch is definitely not for me, and believe me I tried!! I’m not gonna give up and I’m gonna practice a lot of these exercises when I get back home! Just would have been nice if the bike organization suggested an automatic motorcycle if it was just a clutch issue! Hell I didn’t even know they made automatic motorcycles LOL. Many motor officers yell at students head and eyes but without proper body position head and eyes specially at slow speed is impossible to achieve for regular riders. Make sure your machine is protected and stop worrying about screwing up. You're gonna screw up. You're gonna drop it as you practice. Learn from it and get better. This video is great, as all the others you make. I'm about to get my license for Class A motorbike here in Norway and the training and the first part of the practical driver's exam is hard. I'm all okay driving on the road and in the traffic, but as soon as I need to do the slowspeed exercise with cones and a u-turn on small space I just freeze and my right turns are like HUGE.. I do narrow left turns in slow speed very well, but the right turn scares the ... out of me. Any advice on how I can overcome this fear? My head knows what to do, but every time I try narrrow turns to the right I back out and fail.. I find it good that you need to show you can handle the bike before they give you the license, but very frustrating to handle all the rest of my driving, but the right hand turn in slow speed :-(
@davemiller1007 Жыл бұрын
Excellent instruction! Something else I learned in my Motorcycle Course, was that the flywheel in the engine serves as a gyroscope to assist in keeping the bike up during slow turns. A little bit of additional throttle not only helps with the friction zone, but gives it just a little bit more stability. Thanks for the video!

Hi. I used to be a fast knee down rider in my twenties but after a twenty something year gap am now a born again rider in my fifties. After a very shaky start and a few thousand miles am reasonably confident again. I have found videos such as yours extremely useful to remember those things you forget. Your videos are particularly useful as they go into the fine detail that the other instructional videos seem to miss out. One big issue is when practicing the U-turns I feel that my left and right arms are fighting with each other and can only manage to turn in just under 4 parking spaces width. Do you think this is just a case of nerves and dropping the bike or is there a technique to overcome this? I ride a Triumph Tiger 955i and both bike and rider have adequate protection. Thanks.
@MotoJitsu6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes it’s you, it’s never the bike. Fighting your other arm is common, try using only 1 arm to do the steering :)

Thank you for this great video! In my view, simply the best one out there on U-turn technique, and I am pretty sure I have watched most of them over the past couple months since I started taking lessons. I live in Europe and in many countries around here, as others commented already, candidates to the motorcycle license must perform u-turns and figure of 8 (within a limited radius) as part of the practical test. I have been struggling with these two specific manoeuvres, mostly due to my fear of dropping the bike and ending up on the ground. Something I would rather avoid, being in my late 40's, and probably a bit more "brittle" than some of the other beginners... Anyway, I applied your advice during my lesson last week, and I could not believe the difference it made. It just "clicked". I successfully performed both manoeuvres for the first time, much to my surprise I must say. My biggest takeaway from your video was that I really needed to move my body to the opposite side of the turn and put my weight on that peg too. Not that my instructor had not told me to move my body, but I guess I was missing some of the more detailed explanations and tricks that you are sharing in your video. This position definitely gave me the confidence that I was lacking before to lean the bike, and also look in the direction of the turn. I still need to get a bit smoother on the clutch and rear brake, but the fear is gone, and now I am very confident that with a bit more practice I will nail these slow turns. Credit to your teaching skills! Thanks again.

I definitely need to practice more... I can do a U-turn in about 2-2.5 spaces, but I'm very afraid of dropping my new Yamaha Eluder! It does have a bit of a built-in crash bar, but if dropped, it's surely going to do damage to the fairing and saddlebags. And it weighs 850+ pounds! I think a little more progress with each practice and I'll get there, it's just going to take time.

This is a very good video but things like motorcycle gymkhana does the opposite to this, they use the throttle and back brake and not touch the clutch at all when they get moving, it looks incredible. The Japanese started this and they're masters at it.

Johny40Se7en Yup! Very different style of riding and those guys are usually not beginners. Also, 99% or my audience aren’t doing slow-speed competitions so for me to talk about it would be counterproductive.
