My daughter traveled over seas and brought me back amazing bowties with pocket squares. The only problem was they were the real kind. This is actually the method I trained myself with originally years ago watching KZbin videos for hours and practicing in the mirror. However, if not done often enough, it can be forgotten to which you'll spend an eternity in the mirror. Best way I create for myself was what I call the "shoestring method". Think of how you tie your laces, bunny ears first. Done in less than 30 seconds. Good video.😎

Seriously, I believe bowties in this era of time are usually reserved for more formal occasions/venues possibly i.e. tuxedo dress, but if it becoming more more popular all the better! A suit jacket/coat I believe at least needs a necktie otherwise it looks incomplete. A sports jacket or coat is the only way I perceive wearing something a little more than casual without a tie or dress shirt, that can look presentable. That's my opinion anyway, thanks for the instructions and vid!

I wear bow ties exclusively after having to wear a neck tie daily for two years. It’s now been 14 years. As a recommendation: don’t fuss over the bow tie. If it looks too perfect, people will think it’s a pre-tied or clip-on bow tie. It’s okay if it’s askew.

Pretty good instruction, but you go/talk way too fast. Too fast to follow effectively. Your second video ("Easiest bowtie tutorial ever") is much more reasonable. I think that the arrows were particularly effective, showing the direction of travel for the tie. As a matter fact, it is so much better than "51 seconds" that I would just delete the latter because it doesn't do you or anyone else justice.

I wear bow ties often. Where I work, some of us do "bow tie Tuesdays". My wife actually prefers me in a bow tie than a traditional necktie. Let's not forget The Doctor's famous line, "Bow ties are cool."

My father was an industrial manufacturing engineer back in the mid-20th century. He wore bow ties on days when he would inspect the production line. It was a safety measure. A long necktie could get caught in the machinery. He taught me how to tie a bow tie when I was a teenager. He said a mark of a gentleman was knowing how to tie a bow tie. I enjoy wearing bow ties and when someone compliments me I like to tell that story.

In essence if you can tie your shoes, then you can tie a bowtie. It requires the same technique. I cringe when I see clip-on bowties on dudes. Instant man-card cancelation imo.

It's easy to tie a bow tie when you realize it's exactly the same as tying your shoes. You're just looking at it from a different direction.

There is a crucial missing step here. You MUST make sure when you thread the long end through the hole that you insert the pointed /Diamond end of the bow so it’s opposite from the pointed end on the shorter bow. Loop end opposite loop end and point end opposite point end. Don’t have point end lined up with pointed end or bow won’t tighten.

Great advice. One thing I would add. Practice with an old cheap bow tie when you are not under pressure. Most young men find they are going to a formal black tie dinner, get a dinner suit and then horror of horrors end up trying to tie a nice silk bow tie and hour before they going out.

This is incredibly helpful, but I have one question. I’ve tied my bow tie many times and I’ve slowly gotten better at it. One thing I can’t get, is making the knot in the center smooth. In your video, you can see the middle is a little bent, like mine. But when you switch to the front shot, it’s suddenly smoothed out. How do you achieve that?

I struggle with them and I think it’s because my neck is 18”. Manufacturers say they’re adjustable length, but even at their reported limit of 18”, these things look positively cartoonish on my neck when I’m done.

Valid point. My grandfathers and great grandfathers wore them because the Brits brought the culture of suits with neck ties. Bow ties are sadly seen as a more comical accessory. Neck ties are rare too now :(
