Every time I watch Mike’s videos I feel like a kid that’s in trouble and being yelled at by his dad. 😂

That was Awesome Ike. I probably will never tie a Carolina Rig ever again. Also loved the videos when Ben an Cole Slaw can up there to fish with you in your Lakes.

I've been using that rig for years here in Arizona, works great ' especially when putting a glass bead in between the bobber stop and weight, for that click sound attractive component, allowing fish to key in on the baits!

Hello Mike how are you it's old school bill lol lol Mike hope everything is well and what a great video good refresher on that free rig that's for sure and a very effective technique in a very effective break for sure yes I do use the flat bottom Plastics and it seems to work well I also enhance a little bit with that technique the plastic we're using I'll go to a light wire hook to give the bait more buoyancy and action coming down towards the bottom seems to work pretty well and usually use a 4/0 hook on both baitcasting and spinning but Mike thank you appreciate the video Mike and great job great presentation absolutely awesome definitely talk to you soon Mike and God bless you and your family

I’ve used the free rig with a Zman wacky rigged. The buoyant nature allows you to move the lure up and down on the edge of pads and in structure.

I’ve used all the usual suspect plastics for free-rigging, including JDM… and the best I’ve used is - wait for it - the Berkley Jester. Great separation from the weight on the fall, and waving action on the lift/drop once on the bottom. The reason the Jester was a tough sell as a trailer (wide and too stiff) makes it a great option as a Free-Rig bait. Bring it back!!

When would you use this over a Carolina rig?

Was thinking the same thing

Typically the water depth and cover you’re around will determine whether I’m using a c-rig or free rig. C-rig typically has heavier weights you incorporate vs. lighter weight on the free rig..that’s what I make my decision on…hope that helps brother 🤙🏼

You can actually punch pads, super easy to cast.

In certain scenarios YES! I would say I throw the free rig MORE often than the carolina!

Mike, thinking outside the box, thinking of using a Floating wacky style worm so the weight anchors to the bottom and the wacky worm will float up and down in the same area by a dock post or dock ladder or brush pile, laydown. The reverse of a texas rig worm. Yo-yo’d on a limb. Thinking the same with floating fluke style baits.

Question, what type of sinker are you using that the loop is small enough to actually stop when it hits the small bobber stop instead of sliding right over it?

What about the slack line and bite detection? Cast and the weight and bait hit the water together. For the weight to sink down the line (vertically), there has to be slack in your line. Do you keep the slack in your line from the cast or reel in the slack and peel out some slack? Also, after the weight hits bottom, as the bait sinks slowly more slack is created. In one video the answer to this was you have to watch your line for movement but how can the line above water move with all the slack line under water? Do you try to take up slack little by little as the bait falls? If not, can you only detect bites when a fish has the bait and swims with it for 2+ feet or more? If so, this is a ton of time for the fish to spit out the bait. What am I missing?

I'm struggling to see the difference between this and an unpegged texas rig

Toss the northern c rig where ya add a spit ring and hook at the bottom of the c rig swivel & use a 1 ounce free rig weight instead. 😮

It kind of looks like an improvised Texas rig whoever invented it basically ran out of bullet weights and used what he had or what he found on the ground

one of the top notch informational videos but i don't watch too often because i really hate him shouting. it is sooooo annoying
The fact that fishermen are freaking out about this technique and how "new" it is tells you all you need to know about why fishing tackle companies are making billions.
