Great video :) And as said by many before in the comments below, this must be the best and most intuitive tutorial in teaching the Pen Tool for tracing jobs - and similar creations (and yes, I've struggled some in the past). One reason for that is of cause that this tutorial is about Illustrator CC. Illustrator CS isn't as intuitive as CC, actually specially the Pen Tool in CS can be a bit frustrating compared with CC. But, there are ways to handle the first technic mentioned here even in CS, a bit less intuitive, a bit more time consuming compared with CC, but still doable. However, for those of you hooping CS will handle the second technic as well, the one using straight anchor points without worrying about handles, are going to be disappointed. If your try to affect the PATH between two anchor points with this technic (anchor points with no handles) you will immediately fail and get a message box from Illustrator CS saying: "Please use the convert anchor point tool on an anchor point of a path" (i.e. don't try to work with the path itself). This is a bit sad for CS-users since this second technic really, IMHO, is the one to go with first, mostly for its intuitive simplicity and speed. The emphasis, in the beginning of the video, that always make use of some sort of reference image, even lousy ones (better than none), when using the Pen Tool - and that the Pen Tool it self, almost always is to prefer over quick solutions/tools (like Image Trace - especially when using low resolution images) in the art of creating various shapes of high quality, is something that I often have been missing in other tutorials on the Pen Tool, or tools that are meant to be used as a substitute to it - and the best thing about it all is that this tutorial, in a sharp and straight forward way, from the very start to finish, shows how it (the Pen Tool) could be used to achieve just that clean shape with a minimum of anchor points you always aiming for, and that it doesn't have to be so very much more time consuming over trying the easy way out (especially in CC, and in the end the correct way of cause always is superior to short cuts for those wanting some kind of professional end result). Worth every minute! Great job! The download template service doesn't work though. After filling in the name and email the download process get stuck and doesn't come further than "Submitting..." (it goes on for hours without anything happening [and no, there is no mail from GD Pro in the spam mail basket], and that goes for all other templates I've tried to download from GD Pro the last days, too). Hopefully you (GD Pro) will find a way to sort it out - even if there are work-arounds (other pictures/templates to be used) it's always a lot nicer to share the same examples as the one in the tutorial.

Re the template: Making good on the gifting is key to selling product. ;) That being said you can find the Be Brilliant Neon (Be Brilliant neon script wall sign image/ google) and a type image as well as a heron and the hummingbird by google search. Pain in the booty to make your own template blah. I am excited to go through the tutorial, sounds like it will be worth the time to get prepared.

@@ADayInAGirlsHead Downloading the templates , 7 month later, works another way now. When hitting the download button you’ll get a mail with a link and using that you’ll get a folder with templates to your Google Drive (if you have one). So far it works fine. The only thing is that none of the templates used in this video are included in the folder… Looks like GD still has some job left to do to make us completely happy 😊… Using Google search for specific templates /pictures used in a video has its limits. Some are easy to find. Others not. If you want the very specific picture, that is. In this video the “Be Brilliant” and “Oh la la” was easy. The heron and the hummingbird a bit more difficult (time-consuming). The specific “Ok” could also be a bit troublesome (if you’re not an expert in fonts - if a known such one was used in the example). Hope you enjoyed the video anyway!

i had a problem with not being able to write on it and i look at layers and all are locked except a trace/design layer, so that is the one you need to click in order for this to work. You should point that out if you don't in the video.

For me this is not any clearer about how to use the pen tool. For instance are we to hold the mouse or any keys down. Also if I click off the image no handles appear. Also can not get it to join to an end point. My version of AI does not have a Design Trace layer. I would like to see how the pen tool is actually used, not just what it does.

Hi, great video! I have a seemingly stupid question. I've been using illustrator for a while now, but I have no idea how to fix this issue I'm having with the pen tool! As I click on an anchor point and drag to the next point, a line automatically appears from the pen tool! It never used to do that before I updated to the newest version of illustrator and it's really frustrating!! Do you have any idea how to fix this? For example, I normally would be able to mark my anchor, then figure out where I want to set my next point without an automatic line "appearing" as I figure out how where I want to place my next point. Does that make sense? It's like a spider's web of lines follows my pen tool from one point to another automatically! How do I get it back to how the original pen tool works? I don't need an automatic line to follow me to my next point, sorry if this sounds confusing, I'm sooo frustrated, can you help?!

Hello. I have illustrator 2022, and I have not edited any of the factory preferences. I find that when I make Bézier curves, the pen tool terminates my curves (what you may expect if I had let go of the mouse or pulled the mouse outside of the illustrator window). Then, with the mouse still held in, it proceeds to extend the line with anchor points that I do not want (as if I had clicked several times in the direction the mouse is moving). It seems to do this sometimes, but not all the time when I'm working with an opened path. When it happens I have to stop what I'm doing to delete these erroneous anchor points and then continue drawing the path how it needs to be. This never happened with previous versions of illustrator, which lead me to believe it is some sort of new preference that can be turned off, but I have not found one to do so yet. Have you run into this issue? It is very frustrating... I doubt it is an issue with the mouse, because only left and right click are enabled with no scrolling nonsense enabled.
