@@tecmath well this is the easiest year so far. My daughter is finally in a place she can work on her own without me right there. I actually have some free time. She has a hard time with math, so the past few years I took her off her grade level, and started from the beginning, more complex than 1+2, and I can stay on the problems till she gets it, and can do it on her own without help. I make her work the problems. Luckily I can print out worksheets to help me so I don't have to create my own. Theres many resources online. Glad I found you, because I also have a short memory, and can't remember from one year to the next and have to refresh with videos. Thanks for your help,, making it easier.

@@ursulagreen8374 that sounds good. I teach in a school, but a few years back I took my kids out for a year whilst we travelled around Australia (sounds glamorous... we lived in a tent!). I found with 30 - 40 minutes a day of teaching the kids where they were at that they ended up well ahead of their classmates when we got back.

I would like to thank you. I have never been good at maths, therefore I never passed my GCSE maths. I had to do this paper for a management course my company wanted me to do. I am not a young man, therefore struggle to retain info. I found your you tube channel, your explanations and tips and tricks are fantastic. I passed my managers course, but what I was most proud of I passed my GCSE maths paper. This was down to your easy to understand instructions, and the way you look at maths problems. Cheers for the help, the time and effort you put into your channel.

The way I like to do anything *9 is to *10 then subtract *1 (14*9 becomes 14*10=140 then 140-14=126). Both ways are good, this way is just a bit easier in my head 🙂

I do 14 X 9 like this: 9(10 + 4) = 90 + 36 = (100 + 36) - 10. If I were gonna subtract 14 in my head, I would think: (-15 + 1), so rounding and subtracting a 10 is just easier.

Bro i did the same thing, my mum always asked me the 7 th row which (in my head) was the hardest, probably because it was the biggest number with the most amount of odd numbers (i dont count nine because i subtracted the 2nd place to the left of the dot number by the whole number 9*2 = 18 =20 -2, 30-3=27..., in like 2 nd or 1st grade i found out that evey step up you go on the 9 th row you subtracted 1 by the unit place and added onw to the 2 nd plce to the left , was way easier that way), i skipped learning the multiplication tables that way, its more important to problem solve so that they dont get lost when facing bigger numbers.

Thanks for the video. I've been fortunate to be able to do a lot of math in my head but I hadn't really thought about how my mind processed it until I watched your video. In your 17*13 example, I see it as 17*10 (170) plus 17*3 (51) which equals 221. Many people can multiply by 17*10 in their heads but, admittedly, many can't visualize the answer to 17*3 in their heads.

For any of these teens numbers multiplied by 20: Add the smaller value’s ones digit to 20, add a zero to the end, and then multiply that digit by 10 and add the two values. Ex: 20 * 16 20 + 6 = 26 260 + (6 * 10) = 320 For numbers less than 10, multiply the ones digit by 10 twice and add the two products. Ex: 8 * 20 = 80 + 80 = 160

Excellent explanation. That's the Babylonian (or Egyptian) field squaring method. I read in a book where a guy was hired as a computer quant on Wall Street because he was asked in the interview if 2499 was a perfect square. If you understand the 'field method' (don't know what it's called) you immediately spot 50^2 = 2500, so -1 = 49 x 51 = 2499. Should I have been working on Wall Street all this time?

Teaching people WHY algorithms work the way they do is how math should be taught. It helps the algorithms used to solve problems make sense -- especially for those of us who do math based on logic (rather than memorizing steps) - never worked for me. One thing I find helpful is to break everything down until you get an intuitive sense of how it works. Everything in math can be broken down more and more to make it simpler and simpler. Break 2 digits into the tens and the ones, temporarily completely tear apart the equation of you have to. Once you can do that, each part is individually a trivial task, so then just put it back together. You really don’t need to know how weird math stuff works with gross numbers, all you need to know is how basic functions work and how to break a number into manageable pieces. Once you understand this, you’ll understand that this is like 90% of algebra.

So, I have always been pretty good at math. I can do math in my head and do that by using what I have always called my "mental chalkboard". I just see a blank chalkboard and I "write" the problem on the board and figure it out. I never understood why my kids were struggling so hard with math, and sadly I would get frustrated with them anytime I tried to help them. It wasn't until one day, during dinner, my wife asked me why I was getting so frustrated and I said, "math isn't hard, so I don't understand the struggle here. It's add, subtract, multiply, or divide. Why won't they just use their mental chalkboard." Yeah, I am aware of how dickish I sounded. My wife then gave me a deer-in-the-headlight look, and so did my kids. They all asked what was I talking about. After explaining, my wife said that she had no clue what I was talking about, and neither did my kids. It was at that moment that I realized, that not everyone could do that. I had gone 30 years thinking that everyone could do math like I could. After that conversation, which had me apologizing repeatedly, I was able to help my kids with their math without getting so frustrated so quickly. Thank you for making these videos, as I may have better patience, but I suck at teaching. I know how to do things, but I don't know how to explain them so that other people get it. I will definitely let my youngest daughter know about your videos and have her share them with her friends that might be struggling with math. Whenever we were in school, we have all said, "when will I ever need to know this in everyday life?".... And it is a fair point for most of school. But math IS something you will use every day of your life. Thank you for doing something that I can't.

@@Mike2infinityThis sounds controversial but here goes... I didn't trust my kids primary school teachers 100% so I taught my kids the times tables... in the order 1, 2, 5, 10, 3, 9, 4, 6, 7, 8. We didn't move onto the next times tables until the other ones were mastered. I did this where we would start by reading them together 2 or 3 times...I then used an app where you could choose the times table. It had a timer... and the challenge was to do a times table in under 30 seconds...keeping it fun and light. I'd also write up lists of mixed problems of the times tables covered so far... including division. All this... 10 minutes a day...unless they wanted more. Once say they'd mastered the 2s, we'd move into the 5s, and repeat (but occasionally including the earlier tables in!). Hope this makes sense. I'll go further. The problems in this video we used to do like this... I'd call out a problem... (say 14 x 19) and the kids would dive in the pool (we were on holiday) and try to get the answer before they surfaced - but you can modify this (hold breath, whatever, but keep it light and fun).

I understand how do you this if the 10s digit is the same. What if it’s different 10s digit? For example, 26x42

It's the point of magic does anyone know a magician that explains how his magic tricks work? No! That's why as long as it works you don't have to know how.
