Nothing special. Most of the times you dump chips in containers for specific material (titanium, stainless, aluminium) or even specific grade of material and then company comes and takes that from you.

sometimes when i import a step or iges file, there are missing faces. Why tho?

Use Hexagon Designer software

Are you limited to those file types? Try a parasolid xt or xb file. They are more "portable" file types. I've had really good luck with them. Sometimes a face can look like it's missing, but the surface normal is just flipped making it look as if it's missing a face

Sometimes when you convert from one software to another software, some information will be missing during the conversion from one software to another.
