Just imagine to have him as your guitar teacher. The way he brings these things across is another mastership in it's own right. Besides the undoubted guitar master skills. And seems to be just the nicest guy too.

the more I grow as a musician, and as a human being, the more i appreciate the music and the teachings and words of Robben Ford...and I began with Vai Satriani Yngwie....but then Duane Allman appeared, and everything changed, then George Benson, Wes Montgomery, and finally a mix of rock and jazz, Lukather, Martino, Carlton....horn players too, Miles, Grover Washington Jr, Sanborn, Marsalis....but i gotta tell you guys, you know what i still play in my car everyday?? Megadeth, Sepultura, Anthrax, black Flag, Ramones,...no better shit to drive on

Robben was a sax player too, so helped his playing. 4 or 5 techniques for jazz blues. Diminished, playing chromatic, approach notes, mixolydian on the root e.g. G or dorian off the 5th (d)..just for starters. Please try this you will see a difference or play notes of 13ths, altered, 7ths, 9ths...play the notes in the chords. Listening to him for 30 years helped me so much

Ha. I didn't realize that first lick was traditional. I heard Bireli Lagrene play that in his recording of Too Good to be True with Sylvain Luc and flipped out for a second it sounded so good to me. Maybe I need to listen more jazz.

Ah he's saying over G 13 and G alt THE SCALES USED are , Melodic Minor (Typically subbed for the I chord ,)G W 1/2 Diminished (Asymmetrical) G Aeolian b6 (5th mode of Mel Min and G Super Locrian (Mel Min a 1/2 up from root ,The interesting thing is you can create Diminished chromatics from the diminished ladders associated with those subs Another way to get what he is talking about is . G min7 chord = Dorianb2 (2ed mode of Mel min) Dorian b2 contains the G min pentatonic . You are playing the 2ed mode of Mel minor so F melodic minor . The vi chord of Mel min is D min7b5 .That is Diminished you can play the diminished scale right over the vi th degree of mel minor,as a substitution . if you cycle that up a minor 3ed you find you can play the Diminished on F if you cycle that up another minor 3ed you will be on Ab. That would mean you can go down a half step and play G 1/2 Whole Diminished A K A G Asymmetric . You can cycle around that way You could also say the key is F major and the 7 chord of major is E Minor 7b5 and play E diminished W 1/2 and Eb 1/2 W . Combining those two things,is known as . Diminished Chromatic. You can target your chord tones with these Jazz patterns

It's interesting that Robben says that he couldn't get into jazz guitarists but he was inspired by jazz sax players. I reckon that is to do with "the sound". It amazes me that so many post-Charlie Christian guitarists adopted a bland sound. I've heard albums by Herb Ellis, Tal Farlow etc where the sound is so uninspiring BUT just listen to their contemporaries on the sax and it's just so much more vital and exciting.
