Yes. He is marvellous and very sympathetic to the victim (student) and to Vengerov's usual story telling. It takes a very patient student to listen to all of this without feeling the whole show is about Maxim, in a good way but Vengerov can sometimes be oppressive to the student, however inspired.

MV said that "to play simple is very difficult." How right he is!! We have a generation of soloists who tend to play with excessive emotional affectation and overindulgence on every single note. It tires the ear and makes for a boring performance, despite the facial grimaces, knee bends, and other contortions. As listeners, we need the contrasts and the surprises for enjoying the dimensions and depths of the music. Nathan Milstein was a master of making everything he played fresh and new to listeners who had heard it all many times before. Like Jascha Heifetz or David Oistrakh, there was never any navel gazing or silly affectations. The music was always played honestly and served straight up! Thank you for sharing what I consider to be one the best masterclasses I've ever seen! MV is truly a great master artist-teacher.

Luke Hsu is a truly fantastic violinist in his own right. What a fabulous student but so much more. Love his smile and humility. He brought out the best in Vengerov as a musician and teacher, with so much expression and technicality up for interesting demonstration. After watching this Masterclass I am left feeling enriched in music, the violin and smiling about life! Bravo to both Luke and Maxim. ❤️

This is the best practical preparation for a touring soloist I have seen. Many masterclasses have hinted at it with the most common feedback being about projecting your sound, as well as the orchestral harmony etc, but this is so in depth. And his comments on selflessness! Loving it

Conductor's view: 29:10 ,soloists, please dont turn to the orchestra during concert. if you must communicate a change turn to the conductor. Otherwise half theborchesta feels compelled to follow the soloist whereas whoever cant see him continues to f9llow the conductor and now the orchesta suddenly has 2 conductors and chaos ensues. When i work with soloists, including the fabulous Veng erov, i insist that we discuss all details before the orchestra rehearsal. THANK you mozarteum for these lovely masterclasses and congratulations to the talented students and the incredible teacher❤

The beginning of the concerto is like this: the day starts at the dawn. The morning sunlight gradually fills the small city with its walls and magnificent gate. The citizens of the city begin to start the daily activities. Then a glorious military parade started and all citizens joined the festival. The festival ends and the citizens went back to their peaceful daily life. Suddenly a news quickly spreads through out the city that a massive army of the enemy is fast approaching. They are intending to surround and sack the city. The situation is dire and the people begin to panic. At this moment our hero (start of the solo violin) appears. He summons and inspires the people for the defence of the city. He foretells a triumphant victory.

Oh my god I love watching Vengerov interpreting music and teaching. It's an art itself. But also have to give kuddos to Luke Hsu as well! He's done so well under pressure with an audience. Though I know Vengerov is not there to criticize, but somehow it's pretty intense and I think I would have cried if I were him hahaha! I guess having a thicker skin is needed for the industry

It's very nice with just clean , clear textures in piano . I know we are missing all the special timbres of winds and the character of brass and so on . It's not just the novelty of hearing it this way . The tuttis dont have the majesty and lots are missing . It seems that after the very opening the passage with the octaves and double notes all written by Brahms in staccatto(Joachim would never have written accent marks on all those 16th's but the rhythm is against the orch and is never heard in the auditorium . Common sense says they demand bite . I've heard dozens of performances where because of the accompaniment it is not heard it is angry before we go into the serenity of the theme (so like the pastoral serene nature of the 2nd Symphony in the same key !)

I get the feeling that Vengerov doesn't like this student very much. He has a lot of criticism of him that doesn't have anything to do with his playing but with his style, his behavior, his posture, even his ego. I just feel that maybe there's a history between them affecting this class.
